Best Dorm at Cal Poly?

Waitingfornow: Simply call Cal Poly Housing, B 756-1226**, and find out. I have done so a number of times and they have always been most helpful. BTW, I have not heard of any ‘crappy’ dorms. Some are up a hill and a bit farther away than others. That’s the only real gripe (well maybe something to do with partying) other than the chance that you end up in a triple. Call and let us know what you find out.

I called and they said that it is first come first serve (as you all know) but even if you accept later in April they will have dorms available for freshmen but you are most likely not going to get your first choice. I figured as much I mostly just wanted to make sure they didn’t run out. That is for people that are admitted already… I don’t know anything about people still on the wait list but I’m guessing if they say you’re in before may 1st and you send housing in then you should be good :)

Just go ahead and apply for housing now. The deposit is refundable except for $5 I believe, up until a certain date. Check the website. Best wishes to you!

What’s the ratio of doubles to triples in Sierra Madre and Yosemite?
Also what would you guys reccomend. I keep thinking a triple cause your roommates are probably gonna turn out to be your closest buddies since you’re living with them, but then again three people is kind of crowded and might cause conflict. So a Double might also be good. What do you guys think?

^^^Sierra madre and Yosemite are guaranteed doubles no matter what. It’s those red bricks that often convert into triples.

I don’t think you can apply for housing until you have accepted admission.

Waitingfornow: Whoops, my bad. Thought you said you decided on slo already. But gotpeter is right, you can only apply for housing after you accept admission.

waitignfornow, thanks for the info! :] Yeah I also called and they said waitlisted people will hear in late april at the earliest. I dont know why but your post makes me more hopeful.

FYI - Last year a lot of people ended up assigned to triples and were not too happy. Then housing sent out notice that there were still rooms available in Poly Canyon and that freshman could live there if they wanted. Don’t know if that will happen this year.

I’m pretty sure a bunch more rooms came on line then but never heard how many.

Hello everyone,
I’ve recently accepted admission as a general engineer.
I am a day or two away from mailing in the forms to finalize my housing choices.
I am hoping to get into the Cerro Vista apartments, but does anyone here know if I have good chances of still getting a room there? Or is it likely that they are filled up already?
Thanks,
Jon

Congrats on accepting to CP in engineering!
I think you will likely still get a room in Cerro. My son has chosen there too. From what I can tell on CC, more students want the other dorms. I think you are smart to do it now before the Open House and the May 1 deadline. Then things will be tougher.

Checkout Google images for Cerro Vista at CP and you will see some great pictures of the furniture and rooms.

Are you going to Open House?

Hi, can anyone comment on how many students live off campus? Do freshman ever do so? My son has some health reasons for considering this. He will be a freshman. Thanks!

Freshman have to live on campus freshman year, and get a dining plan…no exceptions there…but you can choose apartments on campus vs the dorms.

^how is that possible if housing isn’t guaranteed for freshmen? Or is it?

Yeah, it’s not guaranteed. But everyone usually gets a spot.

It looks like not guaranteeing rooms is a CYA thing for the administration. Before new dorms came online there were years when freshmen were left twisting in the wind. The variable is how many sophs > seniors opt for the dorms from one year to the next so its possible but highly unlikely that there could be more demand than supply.

Thanks for the reply, momofmv
Unfortunately I will not be attending the open house as I am on my school’s volleyball team and can not afford to miss that Friday.

That’s too bad, but good luck at volleyball!
You can get a good idea of the Cerro Vista dorms by the housing site and Google images.

There are tours there this coming week too. It is a specail thing for Spring Break. Myabe you could go down this week instead. It is nice to see the dorms first hand. I would hurry and put your request in though. You get your spot in line and then you can always change up until June 1 (I think)

Like I have said, my son has chosen Cerro. he really likes them. We hope he has some engineer roommates. People who will be studying hard, but need to take some breaks for fun too.

Does anyone know if you have to sign up for the housing tour or can you just show up? My son already applied for housing, but he wants to check it out in person. I think he has until June 1st to make a change to his housing choice.
