Best essay suitable for Biology Major

Hi all!

I am currently a junior in my high school.

As my first college application date is coming, I wan to be more prepared for the essay, as a biology major. So far, I have had very limited experience in community service and volunteering, so I was wondering how to write an essay about my extracurricular activity that is related to my major.

The reason that I have not done much community service and volunteering is because I can't really find any of those extracurricular activity that seems related to my major. I know I can serve my time at hospital or local animal shelter, but it simply doesn't seem to be much related...

I am thinking about lab at local college / universities, but it seems to be too much advanced for me (and I don't know if they will even take me to intern there).

So, what are your suggestions??

It seems to me that both hospital work and animal shelter work are related to your major. The clients in both places are living organisms—precisely what one studies in biology.

My suggestion is “do not let the best be an enemy of the good”. Accept that what you will write about may not be perfect…but waiting for the perfect opportunity delays your essay and delays your personal growth.

Are there any nature preserves in your area?

Also, colleges are more concerned about what you do with your experience than what the actual experience is. They realize that not all students have the opportunity to work at in a laboratory setting in high school. The student who is able to illustrate a passion for biology through his work at an animal shelter or hospital will indubitably do better than the student who writes a superficial essay about his limited work at a more “advanced” place of work.

Basically, continue exploring different employment options. However, if you can’t find the ideal job, working at a hospital or animal shelter will be absolutely fine as long as you write a good essay about your experience there.

Just a question- is it imperative that your essays match your projected major?

The most important thing is to write a great essay. Take a look at the Connecticut College website. They have actual essays written by accepted students. It is clear that a great essay can be written about almost anything.
