Why don’t you outline both topics and see which resonates with you. The topic itself is far less important that what the essay says about you – use it as an opportunity to tell something about yourself that isn’t clear from the application and that will make admission officers want to have you on campus.
I like the math. Its shows the ability to take on a challenge and not give up.
How about a combination of both? Use the #1 as the opening hook to further explain #2.
