Thank you ClassicRockerDad.

When you say things like you’ll probably be accepted by MIT, this sets off alarm bells.

You cannot have this attitude, or at least you cannot have this attitude expressed, however implicitly, in your applications. It’s a turnoff, particularly since no one is a sure acceptance at MIT.

I don’t think Carnegie Mellon is a low match (CSC). Their acceptance rate is something like 7%.

Don’t get your hopes too high. Admission rate was 8.2% for 2013, and it is a fairly self-selecting pool, there are tons of applicants as qualified as you are. It is gravy if you get in, but you need to be ready to accept that you might end up at any school on your list.

@momfromme: I realized that sounded bad about 16 minutes after I posted it. Ah well…perhaps I should say that I think I am more likely to be accepted at MIT than at any of my other reach/high match schools. Clearly, I don’t intend to express this attitude in my application; however, I do think my essays will demonstrate that MIT is a good academic and cultural fit for me.

@intparent: I’ve already accepted that possibility. At this point, I think it’s rather likely that I will pursue a graduate degree, so even if I am rejected from all of my top choices, I’ve still got another shot. :)

Also, @intparent: CMU’s MCS acceptance rate is far above that, and I only need to be accepted into one of the two schools to double major in math and computer science.

Some people say if you like MIT you’d most likely not going to like Stanford, and vice versa.

CMU Acceptance rate is 25% according to this: <a href=“Carnegie Mellon: Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT Scores, GPA”>http://collegeapps.about.com/od/collegeprofiles/p/Carnegie_Mellon.htm

CMU overall acceptance rate may be 25% but you apply to specific schools such as SCS which has a much lower acceptance rate http://admission.enrollment.cmu.edu/pages/undergraduate-admission-statistics

He said that he will apply to both SCS and MCS, so that he’s not overestimating his chances.
