Best Liberal arts colleges

New to L.A. from Canada. Daughter looking for a college/university where she can take sciences and fine arts courses. Any suggestions?

Probably too many LACs to list that qualify. Need more information in order to refine the search.

Has your daughter taken the SAT or ACT ? If so, what is the score ?

Is cost a factor ? If so, what is your realistic budget per academic year ?

Does your daughter prefer to remain in a particular area of the US ?

Any career in mind ?

What kind of science and what kind of fine arts also matters, since colleges and universities may not have good offerings in every science and every fine art.

Well I have ten minutes to blow, so – I’ll list some highly regarded colleges in each state or region. You will need to give us more info to help narrow down the list, of course. These are all liberal arts colleges, and this is far from a comprehensive list – just some of the most selective:

California:
Pomona, Harvey Mudd, Scripps, Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, Occidental

Rest of the West:
Reed, Colorado College, Whitman, Willamette

Midwest:
Carleton, Grinnell, Oberlin, Macalester, Kenyon, St. Olaf, Beloit, Lawrence U, Kalamazoo, Denison, De Pauw, Wabash

South:
Washington & Lee, Davidson, U of Richmond, Sewanee, Rhodes

Mid-Atlantic:
Swarthmore, Haverford, Vassar, Hamilton, Barnard, Colgate, Bryn Mawr, Bucknell, Lafayette, Skidmore, Union, Gettysburg, Dickinson, St. Lawrence, Bard, Sarah Lawrence

New England:
Williams, Amherst, Middlebury, Bowdoin, Wellesley, Wesleyan U, Colby, Bates, Smith, Mount Holyoke, Holy Cross, Trinity, Connecticut College

Since this is posted in the California Colleges forum, I would also include some of these private schools to your list: Chapman University, Mills college, Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, Westmont and University of San Diego.

A few comments:
–If you want a list of highly ranked LACs google “USNWR LAC ranking.”
–My expereince is that each LAC has a distinct “vibe” and that fit is very important.
–Many LACs would be able to provide a fine education in your stated areas.
–Is cost a consideration? If so let us know.
–Any other things you care about in a college? Ex. Greek Life, sports, geographic location, urban/rural/suburban etc…
– Please also provide academic stats if you want specific suggestions.

kind of a pointless exercise without a budget and a better sense for her status and qualifications.

Is your student a US citizen, or will they be applying as an international? Agree with those above that we need more information to make good recommendations.

Building off of @prezbucky’s comment, Pomona, Harvey Mudd, Reed, Carleton, Swarthmore, and Haverford are all particularly excellent schools for the sciences.

I’m not as knowledgeable about the fine arts, but I think Vassar, Williams, and Wesleyan are similarly great for them.

OP has not been back since the original post in May. Since this is posted in the California Colleges section, I would assume OP is looking for LAC’s within the state. Since OP has not clarified intended major, budget and academic stats, any suggestions are moot.

Closing discussion.
