Best Michigan/Ohio/Indiana colleges for theatre???

I have heard so much about U of Michigan being a very good college for theatre, but I was wondering if there were any others. I am from Michigan and would not like to go much farther than Ohio and Indiana. Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you have any questions about the UMich theatre program, let me know. I can answer questions on productions and the Design & Production major, or pass them along to other students for acting, directing or BTA questions.

Thanks, but i’m really not interested in U of M. I’m trying to find other Michigan schools that are good in theatre.

I know for MT, Baldwin-Wallace and Otterbein are excellent. You can check out their Acting programs.

Evansville, CCM

Also Indiana University

I know you wanted schools in Ohio and Indiana, but Illinois (especially Chicago) has a wealth of great theatre schools that you may want to check out and it’s not much further than some places in Ohio and Indiana. Some schools to look into: Depaul, Roosevelt CCPA, Northwestern and Columbia College Chicago.

I hear Western Michigan has a strong theatre program, but I don’t know if they have an actual acting major.

In Ohio, look into Wright State, Kent State, CCM, Otterbein for their BFA acting, and Ohio Northern. BW doesn’t have an straight acting program, but they have a great BA theatre program.

I don’t really know much about Indiana. Sorry!

Good luck!

Notable Indiana schools are Ball State University, University of Evansville, maybe Depauw, and thats about it. IU has a fantastic graduate program, but absolutely everyone I’ve talked to who goes there and majors in theatre says that the undergrad program gets overshadowed immensely, and its possible that an undergrad will never make it into a mainstage production because the casting pool is grad and undergrad students combined.

In addition to the schools mentioned, I recommend Oakland University in Michigan. Great faculty, a real gem!

I believe Western Michigan has a BFA degree. Eastern Michigan University has a BA. Wayne State University in Detroit has a BA, and an excellent graduate program.
I know someone in the BA theater dept. at Indiana; it is true that they are somewhat overshadowed by the BFA and MFA students, but there are MANY theater opportunities at this school; this girl has had no shortage of performing opportunities.

I am kind of confused, you can major in theatre and just DO acting at BW, I understand, what do you think of the theatre program, is it overshadowed by MT?

I understand that Earlham has a decent BA program, if you are interested in small, liberal arts colleges. I only mention them, because the Stagecraft teacher at my son’s secondary school is an alumnus. He had a successful set design career on Broadway before retiring to teach, and he has done amazing things with minimal resources.
