Best Philosophy Schools

Just curious, which schools are considered to have the best philosophy departments?

NYU is considered to have the best philosophy department in the English-speaking world, if that means anything.

Try these:

The Philosophical Gourmet has a ranking of philosophy departments.

Perhaps more useful is its advice to prospective undergraduates.

Grinnell College in Iowa a so called “Hidden Ivy” school, has a good philosophy major.

Thanks for the replies!

Philosophicalgourmet is pretty much the standard, and they only release one report every two years (next report is coming out this fall)

getting into the best program doesn’t really mean anything. I know (lol) someone who went to NYU for undergrad, and is now doing grad. work at a grad. school that isn’t in the top 25, but is in the top 50.

If you’re interested in philosophy, (as opposed to wanting to major for it for pre-law) go to the department with a strong focus in whatever you want to major in: UCLA for example is really good for philosophy of language whereas a school like Berkeley is really good at philosophy of mind. Since UCLA is good for philosophy of language, they have a ton of classes dealing with philosophy of language. I would imagine berkeley has a similar result for philosophy of mind. It’s only really advantageous going to a school like NYU/Rutgers/Oxford for one of two reasons: either A) you’re interested in many different subjects and you’d benefit from prestigious, interdisciplinary faculty. or B) they have someone on faculty with whom you really want to work with. Otherwise it really doesn’t matter as long as you get a good foundation.

If you’re into pre-law, i recommend you go to a university which integrates a strong writing program, which should be any reputable philosophy program, with a strong logic program. (a second course in logic should be sufficient)

Rutgers has a strong philosophy program. I am not a philosophy major but have taken several courses in the department as humanities requirements. This is what Rutgers’ philosophy has on its website.

They have research programs in History, Ethics and Values, Metaphysics, Epistemology, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Science, and Philosophy of Mind.

Are you into pre-law?

I have been looking for answers for this as well. I plan on majoring in philosophy before applying for law school.

Advice?

I always thought Rutgers had the best philosophy program. I am sure, as a general consensus, the top philosophy programs include NYU, Rutgers, etc.

USC has a great program and of course its warm in southern california…and if you’re worried about fees, private schools don’t charge out of state fees…and with a philosophy degree you can become a lawyer, doctor, therapist, a lot of things! And of course getting a masters degree from USC will look great!
