SBUMathgrad -

I am currently in undergrad at UT Austin and I don’t know a single person who does not love the city. If you’re a partier, you’ve got 6th St. which is pretty wild. If not, there are an infinite number of music shows and different cultural events to attend. If you’re into outdoors stuff there are great trails, paddling, and even rock climbing within 5 minutes of downtown. It’s great.

Compared to what everyone else is saying the rent is pretty cheap - I had the choice of having a double for $490 a month and a single for $665 a month in an apartment complex a 5ish/10ish minute walk to campus depending on where you are going right next to the shuttle bus. Speaking of buses, students ride the city buses free with their student ID so that is a plus. I am not really sure where graduate students live, though. I know some live in the coops which are pretty cheap and nice (I would recommend the super coop (nueces, laurel, halstead) that’s made up of three coops in one building, nueces is specifically for grad students).

It’s easy to get around. Downtown is five minutes away on the bus and you could even walk there if you wanted.

The music scene is huge and amazing and things like ACL and SXSW are nice but pretty expensive and it’s super easy to just wait for your favorite artist to come on their own and go see them. At every concert I’ve been to downtown I have actually met and talked with the artist. And the highest I’ve paid for a ticket is $22.

The weather is nice but it gets HELLA hot in the summer and this winter was colder than usual but compared to the north it’s bearable.
