lI am new to this forum and have no experience with the American edu system. S wants med school and is very motivated but.. Scored 1310 on SAT1, hopefully second time around will be better. Averagehigh school grades 93, top 15% in his school, one SATII 750. Interested in a BA/MD program or LAC with good track of admission in med school. I think a small class size is a must. Prefer Northeast location. Please help with advice

not northeast schools but... Xavier university in ohio and DePauw University in indiana both have excellent pre-med/life science programs

well, the ivies and johns hopkins and the like all have excellent placement records to med school (although premed competition is fierce). though, his stats may not cut it...

Are you certain that you don't mean Xavier University of Louisiana? Prior to Hurricane Katrina, XULA had a nationally renowned pre-med program and fabulous results in placing their graduates in schools of medicine.

i agree with lake washington (my mom went Xavier in LA)

Geesh, any school can give a good premed background. Med schools all want the same basic things.

So, the best premed school for your kid is the school that allows your kid to do his/her best. I realize that's trivial, but, IMHO, it is best to focus on all the other aspects of picking a college. The premed stuff will sort itself out later. Besides, the attrition rate from premed is high, so it pays to focus on the bigger picture.

I agree with newmassdad. The rest of the curriculum is as important as the premed part. Your desire for a small school is good, so the prof.s get to know him. Picking a school where he "fits" should be your highest priority. I've sat on a medical school admission committee. There is high emphasis on character and academic performance. Litttle on the particular school unless it has to do with a question about that school E.g. "Why is that school sending so many highly qualified URMs to school X and they are not even applying to us?"

Yeah all schools can give you a good premed background but some schools work harder to make sure you have it. Yes, I meant Xavier in ohio b/c Xavier in LA is a hbc and i wasnt sure if the op was interested in a hbc, plus the whole katrina thing scares a lot of ppl(it took tulane off my list). I also included Xavier in ohio b/c of the health resources around it, there are bunches of hospitals around and xavier has programs through the university of cincinatti's med school that helps pre-med students greatly.

thanks for your input. I'm looking for a shool closer to NYC (400 mile radius)

umm... maybe ithaca, marist or providence college

welcome, atmom. (I hope you won't be mistaken for me).

Not near NY, but Hendrix College (Conway, AR) sends a very high percentage of its grads to med school.

What your kid needs are the
basic science requirements, good grades/recs and high MCAT scores. School and major don't matter as much. (Non science majors may stand out more as applicants).

Check out Juniata (PA)

O.K. Atmom. Hmmm, within 400 miles of NYC.
