Best reasons to go to Penn! Please add yours.

@coolweather “73. PennApps”

I think you transposed the number. Penn Apps is #37.

Yes the world’s fattest squirrels that is for sure!

Maybe I’m just a jaded freshman but,

It’s not all rainbows and butterflies. That list is essentially the boilerplate reasons that the admissions office brags about. Penn is an amazing school but it’s a disservice to post this especially as Penn refuses to take action for the environment they’ve created. We had another suicide and the administration initially misinformed the student body first announcing it as an accident until the reality became apparent. Ironically it happened during Quaker Days and Spring Fling Week so it was buried underneath the excitement for those events. Penn is amazing, we have great professors, classes, and student body but the Work Hard Play Hard attitude we’ve fostered isn’t something that should be celebrated. We celebrate not sleeping, and getting freshman year internships, and superficial conversations of let’s grab lunch but some of the reason listed are not just untrue they’re blatant lies: majority of student haven’t gone to Franklin Field and thrown toast, Penn girls are definitely not awesome, Amy Gutmann is an over paid fundraising cheerleader, unless you’re in the college most kids don’t take semesters abroad, the quad and most other buildings are beautiful on the outside but ugly on the inside: outdated and in need of remodeling.
That being said, I love Penn.

@Ermar101 " majority of student haven’t gone to Franklin Field and thrown toast, Penn girls are definitely not awesome, Amy Gutmann is an over paid fundraising cheerleader, unless you’re in the college most kids don’t take semesters abroad, the quad and most other buildings are beautiful on the outside but ugly on the inside: outdated and in need of remodeling."

75. Frazzled freshmen, at rope's end, venting during finals week

@ermar101 “We had another suicide and the administration initially misinformed the student body first announcing it as an accident until the reality became apparent.”

In many situations it may be unclear whether the event was an accident or a suicide. Therefore, the death may initially be announced as an accident until the coroner can review the evidence and make a clinical determination that the accident was in fact a suicide. Then they need to be inform the family before their child’s photo is plastered all over the news and social media. Contrary to what freshmen may think, the delay in the announcement that is needed to do those things does not mean that there was an attempt to deceive the student body.

@Much2learn That #75 seems a bit harsh. The comments about throwing toast, Amy Gutmann, going abroad and the quad are all pretty accurate, honestly.

You are correct about the handling of the suicide. The police hadn’t officially ruled it a suicide yet at the time the email sent to students, so administration didn’t want to make any assumptions. That said, there is a bit of tension on campus about mental health between students and administration, so it’s a very touchy subject, and many students aren’t pleased with how administration has been handling these issues on campus.

We only present best reasons here. Of course there are things that need to be improved at Penn and these discussions probably will be well received in other threads.

@coolweather Sure, but that doesn’t mean one has to describe a student who is expressing legitimate concerns as: “#75. Frazzled freshmen, at rope’s end, venting during finals week.” You can just state that it’s best to present that information in a different venue.

@whartonpenn2017 It was just supposed to be amusing since it is finals week. I am not really attacking ermar101. I do like how you are advocating for another student though. Penn is lucky to have you.

; Penn girls are awesome though. ;

@Much2learn if you’re list of best reasons is just a cookie cutter, one sided depiction of Penn then it’s pretty valid to attack it. You’re right it is finals week but I’m by no means frazzled. How about instead of your basic list you write things that actually apply to Penn students like: 1. endless study breaks with free food throughout finals week. 2. BYOs from Lemongrass to Beijing to La Fontana 3. Huntsman GSRs 4. Spring Fling Parties not actual Spring Fling because Chance and Blau were shitty 5. The fact that the DP got a Ted Cruz spokesman fired. Etc.

@ermar101 "if you’re list of best reasons is just a cookie cutter, one sided depiction of Penn then it’s pretty valid to attack it. "

An upperclassmen might say they are not “attacking” the list, they are “enhancing” it.

"Spring Fling Parties not actual Spring Fling because Chance and Blau were **** " I didn’t hear about Fling this year, but I heard that Ke$ha put on a really good show last year.

“the DP got a Ted Cruz spokesman fired.” I don’t take pride in getting anyone fired even though I don’t like his boss.

I assume there are Penn students that are Cruz supporters even if they’re in the minority. Quite frankly, I hope Penn’s reputation of having a campus that respects freedom of speech is accurate. Penn gets a green light from FIRE, and that, in my mind, is one thing I’m happy about as I send my son 2600 miles across the country. Penn was built on a foundation of freedoms such as the First Amendment protects. I hope it plays out IRL.

@ermar101 I am still dying to know, why do you think, “Penn girls are definitely not awesome”?
