Best School For Crew

There’s a club in the fall? That’s really awesome. I’m used to doing sports year-round.

Well, but now that I think about it, club sports are only after prep year. Preps either do jv/varsity athletics or “prep spaz”, where you can sign up for different activities. I think crew is probably a spaz option for fall, but not something you could do the whole term-they like you to try a few different activities. I’m not positive about that though, since my kid did interscholastic sports each term rather than spaz.

Anyway, after prep year, you could do club crew in the fall and then team crew in the spring. You’ll also find lots of crew athletes doing volleyball, water polo, swimming, or running fall and winter terms.

I’ll be applying for 10th grade so that won’t be a problem.

Where do you find information about crew as a club? is it on the website?

You don’t have to have fall crew to become a great rower, but cross training for three seasons is helpful. Andover, SPS, and Exeter all have strong spring crew programs and excellent cross country programs, which is great cross training for crew. Andover and SPS (especially SPS) have good nordic skiing in the winter, which is fantastic cardio training for rowing. If you want fall competitive rowing, Choate and NMH both have fall crew and compete at Head of the Charles, although NMH races more races overall than Choate. Both race 4s in the fall. NMH also has nordic skiing. Deerfield rows 4s and has a strong program as well as good cross country, but no nordic and no fall crew.

Great advice NEKreader! My kid’s nordic skiing background definitely helped make him a strong rower this year.

Club sports are listed in the course catalog, which you can find on-line.

Thanks guys!
