Hi everyone:
My son is interested in obtaining a computer science degree/computer engineering degree with a focus on game design. He is considering three schools. I would love feedback on any of the following questions:
1. Of the three schools (RPI, Georgia Tech, Ohio State Univ.) which school offers the best in computer science, computer engineering and a game design concentration?
2. What has been the job opportunities for computer science/engineering/game design degrees upon graduation?
3. What has been the best/worst part of attending any of the above schools in the areas of computer science/game design.

I'd say RPI and GT (either is great), then OSU. Also, just for clarification, Computer science and computer engineering are completely different animals, but it certainly sounds like your son is more interested in the computer science area.

There are hundreds of opportunities for people graduating with a computer science degree, from working for large companies to starting your own business. As far as game design, i've heard from people at GT (information session on the computer science and computational media degrees) that the game design industry is very competitive, but that the opportunities are definitely there if you are willing to work for them. A Computational Media degree is essentially geared for game design if that's what you want to do, but it can also be used for other things.

My son has received a lot of info from RIT but has been awarded the Medal Scholarship for RPI - $15.000 per year - This is just a small bit of change considering the overall cost for attendance - almost $50,000.

GT without scholarships for out of state is around $35,000 a year. Hopefully he will receive some type of merit based scholarship(S).

With this said, does RIT offer any better cost/educational benefits/scholarships?

RIT is a good school, but I thought their campus sucked. The dorms/res side of campus is way too far from the academic side. I didn't want to have to walk that far in the winter. They also seem to be having housing problems (think forced triple or quad). However, I thought the food was good. As far as their academics go, I thought they had a really good computer engineering program.

Good luck with that merit aid for GT because they really do not give that much aid. Two negatives of GT are the dorms are not great and the food is bad.

I will admit that the RIT campus does suck... Other than that though, RIT is very good academically. I'm not saying its the best but it is definitely good bang for the buck.
