I know a lot of schools offer degrees in Education, but do any colleges stand out in their programs? Any recommendations (or warning away from certain colleges?). I'm interested in either elementary ed. or early childhood education.
I'm especially interested in colleges in the Northeast U.S., but if colleges in other areas of the country have stellar programs, I'd consider them. Thanks!

Usually your best bet for elementary education is to figure out what state you want to live in when you are done with school and attend the school in that state with the best program. Licensure issues vary from state to state and there is often no reciprocity from one state to another. Getting a license in one state may not make you eligible for a job in another. It is possible to get emergency licensure in many states in areas where there is a shortage but there are rarely shortages of qualified elementary teachers. If you want to stay in the NE, find out which states honor each other's licenses and limit your search to those states.

Shennie has given you very good advice. A few selective schools in the Northeast that have good ed. programs:
Skidmore, Tufts, Wellesley, Boston U, Manhattanville, Connecticut College
but there are many more out there.
And, most state schools systems have programs that are good as well.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania(and many of the other PA state system universities) are well known for the elementary ed programs. All of those colleges began as 'State Teacher's colleges" in their history. IUP as an excellent Honors College(The Robert Cook Honors College) that is well regarded as well.

Florida State apparently has a very good program.......
