I'm fixing to hit linear algebra next semester, and I've made do with a little Casio calculator to help speed up arithmetic with things such as fractions. To anyone who's taken linear algebra and is a calculator freak like I am, what calculator would you recommend? My professor doesn't allow graphing calculators such as the TI-83/4+, so please don't suggest that.

Preferably a calculator with math print enabled.

“Sadly, the TI-89 falls under the category of graphing calculator, so I wouldn’t be able to use it, except outside of class.”

Did your professor explicitly ban 83/84? The TI-89 is not just a graphing calculator, but a “symbolic manipulator” which in many cases means it can do a lot of the work that your professor wants you to do on paper. The TI-83/84 do not have that level of functionality, and are acceptable calculators for SAT, ACT, APs, etc.

I’d look for some clarification. He might be aiming to ban the CAS (computer algebra system) calculators like the TI-89 and TI-NSPIRE. Doesn’t hurt to ask. :)

Scientific calculators come in different brands and models, but they all do most of the same functions. Now some of the scientific calculators are easier to learn than others.Best TI Scientific Calculators as calculators have advanced in design and functionality,

TI 36X Pro. I use it more than my TI84 and 89. It’s way better than the little green TI 30XS because it has more functions, like a polynomial solver and system of equations solver. It also has i and it simplifies radicals (which the 84 doesn’t do). Overall it’s just really convenient and useful.

The TI36X pro is my favorite scientific calculator. I’ve used all of them, and I’ve found it to be the most user friendly.

I find myself not using calculators a whole lot, but they come in quite handy in physics/chemistry and such where I’m multiplying and adding a bunch of different decimal terms and whatnot.

As far as symbolic manipulation and whatnot goes, I’ve never had a desire to have a calculator that does it. I’ve got a TI-84+ Silver and a TI-36x Pro. They’re both great.

I’ve only taken through AP Calc in high school, but my TI-84 has done wonders for me. My teachers also told me that they had bought fancier, higher-end stuff for their college math courses but that practically everything could have been done with a TI-84.

I’d definitely check for clarification. Calculators are expensive and are quite a big commitment!!
