Hi! I’m sorta “lost” in a sea of information. I love tech and know a little bit of programming. However, I can’t decide what I want to major in. My plan is to double major, but I dont know what to double major in. Can anyone give some recommendations? My friend said to do comp sci and bioinformatics. The most important factors for me is:
100,000+ salary (doesn’t have to be starting)
Pretty big job market (don’t wanna be out of a job/can’t find one)
interesting (i’d like a pretty fun/interesting job)
I know I may seem to be asking a lot, but if anyone has any information or tips they’d like to share, that would be great!
Thanks!
“1. 100,000+ salary (doesn’t have to be starting)”
Uhmm, okay… you do realize 100,000+ salary might not be a lot if you work in places like San Jose right? A 100,000 here might be 68,000 there and so on.
So I will just take this as “a field that has high earning potentials that could warrant me into a safe upper middle class career”
Your 1 and 2 seems to fit Computer Science for now. But we never know the future. 4 years from now, it might not. Who knows?
Number 3 is very very subjective. Personally, I find an interesting job to be like doing research in pure mathematics or pure CS in the academia but for others, this would be considered hell 2.0 .
If your view of a big job market is ability to find a decent job, then I would also say petroleum engineering, geological engineering, chemical engineering, marine engineering, and mechanical engineering.
But uhmm… I’m sure once you enter college, there will be fields that you will be like, “I don’t ever want to touch this ever for at least the next three years” (for my it was physics so that helped me quickly give up engineering)
And once in a while, there are fields you will be so excited about. (for me, it was pure mathematics with its rigorous proofs.)
Don’t fret too much. Most “engineers” have no clue first semester. Luckily, universities know this and make sure all incoming engineers take a general engineering class so that the students can know more about themselves. Although it’s not really that helpful, it can be once a while

btw, BLS.GOV is a great site for people like you. Internet is your friend my friend. And money is not everything. Trust me, I rather respect a person making a great change for the world while fully using his/her talents than someone who has all the money in the world but didn’t bother doing anything but go the easier path for $. And I’m sure, once you retire, the former will be more greatly satisfied with his life.
