Best/Worst

If there are any current Pitt students or alummni(sp?) out there how about stating what you think is the worst thing and the best thing about the school.
And where you you recommend a freshman to dorm I kinda want to live in the towers since that's where the other freshmen live, but the rooms there are sooooo small.

I'm an alumni and my son is a freshman. I think the worst thing is the traffic from the urban campus and the best thing is the wealth of educational, recreational and cultural opportunities afforded by an urban campus. Just my opinion. The people are great, though, and the Towers dorms are the best for freshman. Yes, they are small, but you meet tons of people there and they are very conveniently located. Somehow, everybody has enough space to get by. The beds can be raised varying distances from the floor, and my son stores lots of stuff under there.

One of my best friends is a sophomore at Pitt and he tells me that despite some other drawbacks, the towers are the best place for freshman...centrally located (close to classes), lots of other lost/friendless froshies, close to dining facilities, etc.

PITT '10 = :)

I know this is an old topic, but I like the idea of it.

Best- Pitt has become a world-class university. What separates it from rural colleges is the wealth of cultural and professional opportunities. What separates it from other urban universities is that Oakland is like its own city, where the vast majority of residents are students. And Pittsburgh is one of the most affordable cities.

Worst- You have to factor in the negatives of an urban campus- noise and traffic.

I'm a freshman at Pitt right now and I love it.
The worst thing about campus...the noise of the ambulances which you'll get used to after about a week.
The best thing is being in a somewhat big city that offers tons of different stuff to do and the school isn't in the downtown area so it still feels like a college campus
In terms of dorms, live in Towers. I live in towers now and I love it, granted it somewhat small, but its a college dorm. It really will be like a 5 minute walk to all the classes and at most schools the frosh live on the edges of campus.
-And in case you didn't know they are renevated the cafeteria in Towers so the food will actually be good next year!

Best thing - Hard to say, probably the people.
Worst - Meal Plan

Live in Towers. They've remodeled them since I've been there and are much nicer than they used to be. Brand new furniture and paint etc and much brighter. You'll feel a little left out if you don't live in Towers freshmen year IMO (I lived in Tower A).

The Towers are definitely the most desirable dorms for freshmen. There is food, exercise equipment, laundry, and convenience. The rooms are not large, they are adequate. The kids manage to squeeze in everything they need.

Best thing-the atmosphere and the city
Worst thing-meal plan and housing

just so you know, Pitt just redid their meal plans and the cafeteria in the towers...so its probably not as bad as some used think

many new housing options are available
new dining options in towers will soon be available
check out the website and you can check out the new dining options
lots of offcampus dining options are always available, as well

Everyone's talking about towers..but what about Forbes? It's much nicer and only 4 blocks away from towers if it gets too boring..

Anything over Towers.

Worst thing: Food x 10, campus food is horrible
Best thing: YURI SKORIK and the campus atmosphere

Yes, how about Forbes where they're putting the Honors College freshmen? The location isn't bad, although we never had the opportunity to see the dorm rooms. Also, the WmPitt Union is near for food, a little closer, maybe (?), than the Towers. And you could probably catch buses on Forbes to get to classes. Can someone out there offer more comments on Forbes??? (Or a lot of incoming HC freshman are going to be very anxious! :) )

Forbes is about a 5 minute walk to Towers and the Union. In fact, from Forbes you have to walk past the Towers to get to the Union, so really it's "easier" to eat in the Towers if you lived in Forbes. But the Towers are right next to the Union, so it's all easy either way you look at it.

I doubt you'd ever take a bus to class if you lived in Forbes. It is only like 2 blocks from the Towers and my D lived in Towers last year and I don't think she ever took a bus to class even once. The only time she ever took a bus was maybe to get to the Pete for something, and even then she and her friends walked 'cause the bus is erratic schedule wise.

Basically, the kids seem to walk everywhere no matter where they live, assuming it's the lower campus. Forbes will be fine.

mercymom is right on that. The only time kids will take the buses is if they are going offcampus to see a movie or something then they'll take a city bus. And kids that live on on the hill in (sutherland, PA, panther hall) take pitt shuttles often especially during the winter
