Federal and state regulators are cracking down on illegal unpaid internships. With unemployment in the double digits, many young workers are taking unpaid internships in the hopes of keeping busy and enhancing their resumes. A 2008 survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers found that half of all college students had held an internship, compared to 17 percent in 1992.

Grads so often can’t be hired without work experience in a particular field, and now they will have one less way to get that work experience. And so it goes …

No, there will still be unpaid internships…employers will just have to follow the rules and pay for those positions that require it. Many corporations have been following the FLSA rules for ages, it’s just a wake-up call to those that don’t! These are NOT new regs!

What ever happend to the freedom to contract? I loved my summer interning - I learned a lot and made great contacts. Oh yeah - and it was for the federal government!

I once had an unpaid gig with the feds too. I made license plates every week (Monday - Thursday) for 8 1/3 - 25 years (10 years off for good behavior). I think it made me the man I am today, and I am horrified that the federal government is going to start forcing businesses to obey laws as if they were just ordinary folks like us.

Lol, Garda…I’m sure the prison wage is an exception…perhaps we can get Mr. Cuomo to look into that next (seems he starts all these investigations and suddenly the feds get a bug too!). Bad deal, glido, I was a federal intern in college and made very decent money…paid my rent, groceries, and utilities for my last two years. Of course that was when you could rent a one bedroom for $175 a month and eat like a king on $30 a week!
