<p>Well, virtually every selective school lists "rigor" as 'very important" in admissions; substantially fewer list "gpa" as "very important" (although still a majority). So, my take is the rigorous course load is better.<br>
Although the example you cite is very specific on GPA and not very specific on rigor. I think there is a continuum, say all AP/IB classes at one end and all standard non honors at the other.</p>

<p>Better to get the 3.78 with the demanding course load, and best if that demanding course load were predominately APs. And yes, best to get the 3.95 in the demanding course load, but you'll never have a chance if you dont take the rigorous course load in the first place.</p>
