Better to have state aid given directly to student, or to the student's account?

My 12th-grade son is starting to receive post-acceptance post-FAFSA forms.
One form asks if he wants state aid paid either directly to him or to his student account (the account with whatever university, I assume).
I’m guessing that it’s just more convenient to have aid sent directly to the student account.
Are there any other advantages/disadvantages of doing it either of these ways?

Surprised they give the option of the student receiving the check. That could lead to abuse. (Not that your son would abuse it.)

Have it sent to the student’s account.

I think I would go with the student account at the university, where the school gets permission to: withdraw tuition, fees, on-campus student purchases, etc.

Having a direct check, uh, no. If he uses up the check on an expensive laptop computer, like my nephew did, then he’ll be tapping into the tuition portion of his funding.
