Between Amherst and Williams

For students accepted to both and go to one of them, does anyone know what is the percent who go to amherst over williams, vice versa?

50/50 /************/

Numbers like that aren't readily available. You can easily determine a given school's overall yield (which is the percentage of all admitted students that actually enroll). But the results of specific school-vs.-school matchups are rarely publicized.

In recent years, Williams has had higher overall yields than Amherst (for example, 47% vs. 38% in 2006-2007). But the overall yield is just an average, with large variations relative to different schools. For Williams vs. Amherst, the split is most likely in the 50/50 range.

I suspect that most of that is a fairly significant difference in the percentage of the incoming class accepted Early Decision. Williams enrolls about 40% of the class ED. I believe Amherst caps the ED percentage at a lower number. You have to accept three RDs to yield one enrollee compared to 1 for 1 in the ED round.

Based on the 2006-2007 CDS numbers, ED does have a lot to do with it. If you subtract out students admitted via ED, then the Williams yield advantage is considerably smaller (34% vs. 30%).

The Williams applicant pool seems to have greater interest in the ED option than the Amherst applicant pool. For 2006-2007, the number of total applicants to both schools was nearly identical (Amherst had 2% more), but the number of ED applicants was clearly not (Williams had 41% more).

Amherst states that they actively discourage applicants from applying ED unless they are absolutely positive that Amherst is their first choice etc etc etc. They cap the ED at a fairly low rate (it's been about 28% the past few years)...I don't know if that keeps students from applying ED or what. I heard the cross admit data was about 50/50, but I don't know.

which one you plan to go if you got admitted to both colleges?

I'd choose Amherst

amherst forever

My son chose Williams when we first saw them and after the acceptances came in. I loved both schools, but of course I can only admit that on an Amherst board. Grrr! Lord Jeffs Boo! (LOL).
