BFA Acting Class of 2023: preparation, prescreens, auditions, questions and support

@tryingsohard I don’t think it could be a ‘bad’ thing but I don’t know how common it is. Did you know anyone who else who auditioned there that was not video recorded? Or was?

Last year someone reported the same experience but as I recall they were not called back. So I think it’s an encouraging sign but, as with most of this process, don’t count too hard on it meaning anything big! My D audioned at LA Unifieds and they asked for a 3rd monologue but I don’t think they recorded her.

okok, thank you, that helps - we couldn’t figure out if it was part of the process or not (some kind of callback to get the callback? lol)

@tryingsohard, Kevin Kittle (head of the Rutgers program) is at the NYC auditions, while other theater faculty do the on-campus auditions. So at the on-campus auditions, when they think someone is a good prospect, they send them to another room to be videotaped. Then when all the auditions are over, Kevin Kittle and the faculty review the videos and choose who will be invited to the callback weekend.

So if you’re videotaped, it’s like you made the first cut and you’re still in consideration. It’s no guarantee (my daughter was videotaped last year, but didn’t get the callback), but it’s a very good sign.

I don’t think they video at the NYC auditions (they may not need to, since Kevin Kittle is there and he’s the one who decides), but I’m not 100 percent sure.

I see over on the MT thread that there’s some Y’s and N’s trickling in, with more N’s. On this thread and from folks I’ve talked to it’s still radio silence straight across the board. Is anybody seeing or hearing anything different? Is it all going to happen at once at the end of February?

@actorparent1 My D auditioned over the weekend for Rutgers at NYC and after I saw this post and showed her Kevin’s photo from the university website but she didn’t think it was him who auditioned her. Unless he looks rather different from the picture or my D didn’t recognize him. But it was a man and woman who auditoned them, D had a good experience (which we know means nothing but I’m glad she did. The process is just as important regardless of the results. BALs to everyone with remaining auditions!

@NYAndOne Outside of the expected no callback from Juilliard we have heard nothing. The schools my D has auditioned for have Feb/March decision dates except LIU Brooklyns’s new BFA program - not sure when to expect an answer (my D has been admitted academically with $13K merit).

To clarify, we have not heard from the auditons in NYC the past week or so. My D applied EA to The New School (admitted) and admitted to AMDA so far.

@NYAndOne I think there are a LOT more people on that MT thread. Speaking for myself, my D has scheduled all of her auditions for Northeast based Colleges into Chicago Unifieds next week. Onsite auditions we have done have been UCLA and USC here in California, and then Elon in North Carolina last October. A lot of the schools I see people discussing in that MT thread aren’t even on my D’s radar for acting.

I am expecting most decisions to come in mid-late March. Possibly some earlier, like late February and early March. But reading last year’s thread, seems like 2nd and 3rd week of March is prime time.

@NYAndOne All of my D’s auditions are during LA Regionals/Unifieds in February, so we don’t have any result letters besides the academic acceptances from Pace and Point Park.

I just checked our spreadsheet from last year - yes’s and no’s and WLs were spread out from the 16th of February to the 3rd week of March. D did hear from Marymount Manhattan a couple of days after her audition on campus at NY Unifieds.

My S received a no from Ithaca today - auditioned at NYC Unifieds on 1/18. Always a bummer but a lot still to hear from and many still to audition for in Chicago. Good luck to everyone!

@NYDreammom, I’m sure he’s not the only one in NYC. He probably has other faculty with him doing auditions as well. I just remember last year, the acting teacher at my daughter’s performing arts high school made a big point of saying “Those of you auditioning for Rutgers, make sure to do it in New York because that’s where Kevin Kittle will be” - but she said it at the beginning of January, months after we had set up my daughter’s appointment for an on-campus audition. So frustrating!

Anyway, fingers crossed for your D!!!

Thanks, @actorparent1! Hope your D and S are enjoying their programs!

@NYAndOne - The results definitely did NOT come all at once. @MTmom2017 is correct that the results spanned many many weeks. It was very difficult waiting. Each week, I would be sad when the weekends came because results don’t come out on Saturdays and Sundays. For us, we got our first acceptance in mid-March and from that point until April 1 was a blur-- getting the acceptances and stressing about visiting schools during April before the decision was due on May 1.

@MTmom2017 first thing I’m doing when this is all over is wine. Close second is deleting my spreadsheet!

@NYAndOne ? Wine is what got me through the process (twice)!!! I love a spreadsheet, and with all of the information I had & the time it took to gather it, I couldn’t bring myself to delete it. I hate to admit it, but I still have D1’s MT spreadsheet from 2013 - same reason. Now thinking I might need to delete that one…?

@MTmom2017 We call that “electronic hoarding”! More wine! Less spreadsheets!

I could not have survived without my spreadsheet, wine and Cc!!!
