@NYDreammom how soon after TNS audition did you receive your acceptance? My DD audition is at the end of the month… thx
@BettyBNYC2023 My D applied early action to TNS so not sure if it is the same timeline but auditoned in early Nov and decison came mid-December or so. BAL to your D!
@love2share - nope! She was so busy this time last year - we were grateful that the auditions could get done so efficiently and the schools she wanted to audition for mostly came to Unifieds. But she was suuuuper picky about where she’d go to school so we had several strong BA options in case that small, select group of audition schools didn’t let her in for a BFA! Even if she had auditioned more widely I think we would have stuck to LA Unifieds for any schools that audition there - she had a friend who flew all over to do campus auditions and multiple Unifieds - she ended up really sick. It’s not easy to get to Michigan or Wisconsin or Oklahoma from Los Angeles during school weeks in winter.
@CaMom13 So wonderful to hear! All of my daughter’s schools were auditioning in LA, so we took advantage of that since we are local here. Some of her friends were telling her that it’s not good to be seen towards the end of the audition season (since LA is the last of the Unifieds, after NY and Chicago), so she was a little worried. If you don’t mind, I’d love to hear which school your D selected.
@love2share - if I recall your D also has DePaul audition- it’s a treat, hope your D enjoys a lot! It was my D’s most favorite experience in NYC- she loved the faculty and especially the partner scene work, which is not something we had with any other audition.
@love2share My D is at NYU in their Musical Theatre studio (NSB). She also auditioned at Pace, CMU, Rutgers, The New School and BU at LA Unifieds and I don’t think she felt like any of them weren’t still seriously considering students. I wouldn’t worry about that little bit of negativity - the schools don’t come to LA for fun (although they like it), they come to pick students for their programs.
One of the girls we chatted with last year at the LA Unifieds ended up at DePaul! So there you go.
@NYDreammom Yes, my D has a DePaul appointment on Monday, her 2nd to the last audition. Thank you for sharing how much your D enjoyed her DePaul audition. My D noticed that she will be performing her monologue in front of the other students, as well as faculty. She was a little nervous about performing in front of other auditioning students. It sounds like from your D, that the environment was a positive one. Is your D at DePaul?
@CaMom13 That’s good to know! NYU is a wonderful school! I"m sure your D is loving it there! My D is auditioning to the same schools, except she doesn’t have The New School. Maybe we’ll see if they’re talking walk ins!
My S had his DePaul audition yesterday on campus. He said it was a great environment and enjoyed the process a lot. The parents went on a tour of the theatre school building. The performance spaces are very nice. We were told that about 800 -900 pre screens were sent in and about 40% pass so the hard part was over! They were very relaxed and welcoming.
My D is loving NYU and NYC (she wanted a city school… and she got one!). TNS was actually the only audition she didn’t enjoy - the auditors were kind of hostile. Everyone else was great. BU’s info session has to be experienced - you walk out wanting to apply to Acting school. You’ll have a great time - I was nervous and stressed, my D was nervous and stressed… and we both actually enjoyed Unifieds.
Yes, DePaul made it clear that they don’t make decisions until all auditions are done, hence mid- March notification. I suspect this approach is/may be true for other programs.
@CaMom13 do you have an insight if most of Tisch’s applicants are ED vs RD? Just curious given higher acceptance rate for ED for NYU.
Yes, DePaul audition environment was great, the kids were all friendly and supportive and not a big group - maybe 10-15 at our session in NYC.
I don’t think it matters. NYU decisions are made by NYU Admissions and not by Tisch faculty or staff and to give the school credit they do not seem to be chasing rankings by playing games with front-loading ED decisions so they can look exclusive with RD. Their acceptance rate is plummeting anyway but urban schools as a whole are hot these days and all the big urban universities are getting more applicants than they can handle.
NYU has a pretty unique BFA admissions process - you go in for your artistic evaluation and that eval goes with your application to NYU Admissions - artistic merit is considered as 50% of your admission decision. I have heard if the faculty really want someone they can influence admissions but mostly the students admitted are talented and also have strong academic qualifications. Also, Tisch is huge, they have about 300 actors per class so they don’t have to cherry pick in quite the same way as other schools and they have the leeway to choose whoever they want - NYU admissions knows not everyone will attend if admitted but with a large class size and a deep waitlist they don’t have to “Tufts” anyone - reject them because they think the student will accept another school.
@CaMom13 Thanks so much for sharing! I’m looking forward to spending the next 4 days with my D and experiencing this all together!
Thank you @CaMom13 !
@collegeadmissions Interesting–my notes from last year say that DePaul had 1100 prescreens and passed about 300.
@NYDreammom @CaMom13- D was accepted ED at NYU for Acting. We thought there was about a 30% acceptance rate for ED.
@yellahamma - first off - congratulations to your D! Please PM me if you have any questions, I’m a happy and proud NYU mom and willing to brag (privately) all about the wonderful things my D gets to experience there. I think in general ED acceptance rates are higher than RD for most schools but I’ve been told that is because the ED pool is higher match to the schools accepted student profile than then RD pool. I would not be surprised if NYU ED was an overall 30% acceptance rate but I’d be really surprised if that was the TSOA admit rate for ED since I think RD at Tisch is about 15%. Did you hear that number somewhere?
@CaMom13 and @yellahamma “For the Class of 2021, our overall admit rate was roughly 28% while early decision candidates were admitted at a rate of roughly 38%.”
