BFA Acting Class of 2023: preparation, prescreens, auditions, questions and support

Hi! migrating over here from the MT boards. I just got a phone call from Otterbein saying I had been accepted into their acting program. It’s my third acting acceptance so I figured it was time to check out the acting/drama board lol.

If anyone has info on crossover between MT and acting at Otterbein that would be GREAT. hoping everyone gets good news about schools soon!!!

Good for you #MThopeful99 ! I am sorry but I do not know anything about Otterbein Acting, though it is a great school.

2artskids We are waiting to hear from Ithaca Acting--portal is still working if that even matters.

To all/others in this group: Has anyone auditioned for the Pace BFA Acting for Film TV, Voice overs & Commercials? If so, would you please be able to share audition experience and how the “screen test” that they describe works? Audition is this weekend. Thanks so much!

@MThopeful99 - my D had 2 friends from HS who went to Otterbein for BFA acting, both really enjoyed their time. And from their FB posts, they were in several musicals along the way

@MThopeful99 - Congrats on your acceptances! Last year, I chatted with @entertainersmom about Otterbein. Her S graduated last spring. If she’s still reading - perhaps she can chime in. As I recall, there are good opportunities for crossover between MT & acting.

I’m here  Son had MT acceptances, but chose Otterbein as a BFA Acting major. He ended up being in more musicals than straight plays. The faculty truly cares about their students and are unstinting in the support they give them. He took dance every year and had private voice lessons on a weekly basis that was extra $, but very reasonable. He received enough in scholarships to make Otterbein attendance price roughly the same as an in-state school. We live in Maine, and having him 900 miles away was tough, but I knew he would not be lost in the shuffle.
If possible, take the opportunity to visit the program and do the overnight. As an aside, when son did the overnight, a fellow CC mom’s son was his host. Let me know if you have specific questions and I’ll do my best to give you the information you are looking for.

@posivibes, Last year, D checked her Ithaca portal on 2/27 & it said “Accepted 2/21.” She doesn’t know if it had changed on 2/21 and she missed it, or that was the decision date & it changed 2/27. She also got a big envelope in the mail on 2/27 with an acceptance letter dated 2/22.

Also, someone from this year may chime in with more details, but last year for Pace FTVC they got a scene & were paired with a partner. They had time to rehearse and then the scenes were filmed.

@FamLawTX - TXST hasn’t made their Acting acceptance calls yet. Last year D got an email 2/28 saying she was in the Priority Hold group (she was accepted 5/1). I don’t know how they sent the no’s. When our MT D auditioned years ago, she was in the PH group until May, but never got in. She finally got a snail mail letter with a redirect. Although the departments are completely separate, they have a similar notification process.

@posivibes My D auditioned for Pace FTVC at LA Unifieds, so I’m not sure if they run it the same on campus. It’s a good idea to check in early, because they will go in order of check in. There were about 50 students in our session. They had a short brief intro with the parents and students. Then, parents leave for the audition session or hang out in the waiting area. All the BFA Acting, BA Acting, and BFA Acting FTVC auditioned together as a group. They started out with monologues. You go in one at a time into the room, in order of sign up, perform one of your contemporary monologues. They may work your monologue, ask questions, etc. After everyone performs their monologues, they are paired up with 1 or 2 scene partners, and given a scene to perform. And they give plenty of time for the students to rehearse. After all the scenes were performed, they posted a list of names for a movement callback. They announced that callbacks are for BFA Acting and BA Acting programs, and there’s usually no callback for FTVC. But my D, who was FTVC did get a callback. She had a lot of fun! We were there from 1:30pm until almost 5pm.

@posivibes after checkin they will bring the kids to their floor for auditions. Parents then have Q and A time with staff/students. Auditioners will do their monologues, get assigned a scene and have practice time, then go in front of the camera. No calbacks for FTVC. If you haven’t visited campus yet, it’s a great time to do an informal walk around. You are also right near the World Trade Center. Plenty of spots to grab a bite to eat.

OMG! I can’t say which school yet until it’s official. D got a personal email today informing her that she will be offered a spot in their program even though official acceptance letters won’t go out for another few weeks. He wanted to let her know that he knew at her audition that she would make an amazing impact in their program and he wanted to tell her then and there. He would love for her to come study with him and their program before she starts hearing back from other schools. Oh, wow! This made my D feel really good! And such good energies and vibes going into her Rutgers callback this weekend!

That’s awesome @love2share ! D’s friend got an email like that after Chicago. What an amazing complement and confidence boost. So I know which school ?. Congrats!!

Thank you @MTmom2017, @workinggirl125 and @love2share…this is all super helpful info on Pace. Also congrats @love2share. What a wonderful program for a faculty head to provide such a personal touch. That one may be hard to turn down!

@morgan830 Yes, definitely a confidence boost! Thank you!

@posivibes Yes, it does make it harder to turn down. Final cost will be factored in as well. Can’t wait to see if there’s a talent scholarship involved.

My D’s friend got an email acceptance for Shenandoah Acting today. Really happy for her - she’s very talented and hilarious.

Hi there. My S got a call earlier today with acceptance into Ball State Acting. Haven’t had a chance to visit yet, but he did say it was one of his favorite auditions and really liked the faculty in the room. If anyone has anything to share on the program, campus, faculty, etc. would love to hear from you. Thanks!

Break legs to everyone going to Rutgers and Minnesota/Guthrie call back weekends!

@TravelMom402 Thank you! Looking forward to Rutgers Callback this weekend! BAL to everyone!

I got into Ithaca via email with a PDF of the letter attached.

Thank you @MTmom2017 . A female classmate who auditioned on same day got a rejection letter already and I was concerned that we had missed something as I thought I understood that rejections were typically sent after priority hold notices. My S still hasn’t heard anything.

@hamdog123 Congratulations! It’s nice to hear of an Ithaca acceptance. Ours was a no and our portal had been working the day before. Fun school though.

@lovetoshare Sounds like your daughter really wowed them at auditions! Hope she does it again this weekend at Rutgers. BAL!

@TravelMom402 Thanks for the good wishes. mine is traveling alone to Minnesota right now.

@2artskidz Thanks so much! Looking forward to a fun weekend! I’ll be relaxing on the Rutgers campus while she’s performing. Although it looks like rain/snow is in the forecast. :snowflake:?
