BFA Acting Class of 2023: preparation, prescreens, auditions, questions and support

Yes, that is what we were stalking! It is kind confusing too if I remember correct, but became clear when decision was there:)

The CalArts VIP portal seems similar to me to TNS portal. Noticed how most schools use similar types of portals, just branded for their own purposes.

@collegeadmiss Thanks, and congratulations! My D didn’t apply early so we’re still waiting to hear. Wondering how soon after auditions they make their decision.

@BettyBNYC2023 At the audition, TNS said they’d be notifying around April 1st.

Regarding UNCSA (I have no dog in this hunt as my S never applied last year)- Everything I’ve read on cc through the years has suggested that they send out some “apply next year” letters along with the rejections. It’s very possible that they are trying to figure that stuff out. That is- they likely aren’t just sitting around with decisions made and no desire to get out the letters. This process is frustrating because you need to hear from all your schools to make a decision- but hang in there. It’s only March 3. April will be a blur for many of you, but you will eventually hear. Good luck!!!

My kid also never applied to UNSCA, so I have ZERO direct knowledge. But I will throw out the idea some schools just seem to have lousy admissions depts. BUT - once you choose your school - you are DONE with them. Focus on the dept - not the office!

I just randomly logged into my D’s Ithaca portal and an acceptance was there waiting on her. We never received any message to check the portal. The last time I checked was probably around March 1st, to make sure the portal was still active, and there was no message. This morning the message said she was accepted to the BFA acting program on February 26th. So I think the acceptances go into the portal a few days after the actual acceptance date. Just wanted to tell those of who are still waiting on Ithaca to go check the portal. You may have a surprise waiting there like we did! Good luck to everyone!

Congratulations @loudclappingmom! Good for you for checking the portal and finding great news!

@FourStars thank you so much! So, our current count is: acceptances to CCM, Ithaca and Evansville. Rejections from Southern Methodist and Rutgers. And my D just got back at 3AM from the Minnesota Guthrie callback weekend (there were 72 kids there and about 8 kids who couldn’t come and uploaded videos instead, bringing the callback number to roughly 80 kids). Still waiting for answers from 8 more schools… It’s going to be a LONG March I’m afraid. HA! I know you must be glad to be done with this part of the process. Thanks for all the help and support you give to those of us going through it this year.

@loudclappingmom Congrats on Ithaca! And for checking the portal.

@love2share thank you! The CCM and Evansville acceptances came towards the end of 2018, but the two rejections came quickly back to back after Unifieds. That had me nervous for my D. So glad to get a yes from Ithaca!

May be a quiet day today as seems most NYC area schools are closed today due to the storm.

How did callbacks at Rutgers and Minnesota go for everyone? With a D at UMinn/Guthrie, I have some idea from a current student’s perspective, but I’d love to hear how it went at both schools for everyone involved. So exciting.

@TheSheSaidit My D enjoyed the Minnesota weekend. She sounded concerned that she did not get the second look callback, but we assured her that was not a bad thing. Didn’t complain about the cold either. She enjoyed the shows is your daughter a junior (that’s the UMinn show they saw)? Can you tell us how soon after the weekend they start acceptances? Her info was vague on that one saying that they have offered people a spot as late as August!

@2artskidz Hi there, my S was also there and he enjoyed it as well. Something to share is that heard from the current students there that the majority of them did not get second look callbacks and they only know of very few of their current classmates that did. From what he gathered, these were the students they were undecided on versus having a more definite take on the others. Hope that helps.

@ThenSheSaidIt My son loved the callback weekend at UMinn! He was impressed with the students running the workshops and the faculty during his audition. The kids were able to see three shows: the senior showcase, “As You Like It” at the Guthrie, and “Electra” performed by the Junior company! My S loved all three shows. The school shot to the top of his list after this weekend! Fingers crossed here!

@2artskidz Good to hear she enjoyed it. The second look callback is not an indicator of interest. My D did not get called back Sunday and she was given a first offer. I agree it’s so hard not to read too much into every detail.

As for the cold, it was a HIGHLY unusual weekend for that. BRrrrr! Hope it doesn’t scare people off.

My D is a sophomore so she was not in Electra. She was mingling with people and they hosted four in their apartment.

It’s typical for first offers to go out beginning as soon as Friday of this week for Minnesota, but things can change year-to-year. Calls are made for offers and waitlist, others will receive emails. Yes, some people have been made offers late, usually because students are shifting around as they make their decisions and sometimes a slot may open late in the game for a variety of reasons and they work to make sure the company has the right numbers. Hope that helps.

@HPDbfa That was what I assured her. Not a bad thing either way.

@loudclappingmom Congratulations on the Ithaca acceptance and the other early ones! I bet the letter is in today’s mail. To have three to choose from this early must be nice. We have one yes, but still waiting on the majority. I agree March will be long…at least the next two to three weeks.

@HPDbfa and @songbird17 Glad they enjoyed Minnesota despite the cold. We’re local and even we were wide-eyed at the temperature. Not typical at all. I heard that Electra was phenomenal. Glad they got to see one of the upper-class companies at work. Fingers crossed. @songbird17 if your S has it as his top pick, I hope he let them know. They are good listeners that way and (naturally) only want people there who truly want to be a part of the program.

@ThenSheSaidIt I will let him know! Thanks!
