BFA Acting Class of 2023: preparation, prescreens, auditions, questions and support

@Notmommarose I think you might have been asking me about my D liking Rutgers? She had so much fun during Callback Weekend, she didn’t want to go home after! She loved all the teachers that taught the movement and voice workshops. And she really enjoyed meeting and getting to know the first years students. I got to walk around the Douglass campus, as well as visit one of the Dining Halls. I originally was signed up for a Scarlet Tour Monday morning, but due to the snow storm Sunday night, it was cancelled. The weather during the day was nice and the campus was beautiful, especially with the snow.

Has anyone gotten any news from Purchase yet, either positive or negative?

What a roller coaster this process is. S heard yesterday from Chapman that he was waitlisted for Screen Acting, and he is crushed. I am trying to tell him he’s doing fine at this stage of the process, with two acceptances and two waitlists, and no rejections since the DePaul prescreen … but his sights are set so high, and it’s hard to watch his confidence be shaken. This is a hard process for both kids and parents!

Long time lurker. First time poster. When am I allowed to panic?

@MomMimi Good for your S to have two acceptances and 2 WL at this stage. He’s in a very good spot, from my experience. WLs are not a bad thing. I have heard many kids have come off WL in the past. Stay positive. This is a grueling process but it doesn’t last forever. There is just the right spot for him and he’ll find it.

@LGC789 No panicking until mid to late April! It is hard, I am with you but there still are many schools that have not announced decisions yet. We have not even heard from our non audition schools. Hang in there, you are not alone.

@2artskidz @LGC789 I think this should be our new mantra: “No panicking until mid to late April.” Who’s with me?

@ThenSheSaidIt @2artskidz

Thank you.

Good morning, my son got the status update email from Chapman last night and he was admitted into their BFA in Theatre Performance. I’ve already been in touch with CC members whose kids are BFA Screen Acting students there and they have been incredibly kind and helpful, so thank you (this truly is a supportive community). If anyone has insight into the Theatre Performance program, I’d love to hear more about it and your experiences. Haven’t had a chance to visit yet, but visiting Cali right about now from freezing Boston sounds good. Thanks!

@FamLawTX we haven’t heard anything from Purchase either. Early on my S applied to their BA program and was accepted, but we are still waiting to hear on the BFA.

@ThenSheSaidIt, thank you! I agree, it’s way to early to panic. I believe there are wonderful things still out there to come for everyone.

@ThenSheSaidIt -I’ll join you!! I’m going to have to trust that April is when to panic. My D is waiting and yet to hear of any acceptances yet!

Don’t panic, but I would say that IF you’ve already heard from almost all your schools and don’t have an acceptance, it’s a good idea to look into additional schools to apply to with late deadlines, or safety schools that don’t require an audition, or talk about a Plan B, etc. Don’t panic, but DO take control of the situation by exploring other options.

But if you don’t have acceptances yet but still have lots of schools left to hear from, try not to worry until you hear from them (easier said than done!)

My D received a decline from Chapman screen acting last night - it was a tough one because she said it was by far her best audition with tons of praise from the auditor in the room…and then…not even the waitlist. She could hardly believe how much he gushed and seemed to want her in the program during the interview. Ouch.

I know that all the decisions are independent of one another, but it really has rattled confidence. I keep telling her it just wasn’t her school, etc. but this one hurt. I haven’t posted about declines because I know that is part of it. But just commenting on this one as a way to say how truly unpredictable this whole thing is! Would have thought that one would have been in the running somehow, but it’s not the one. Not panicking yet - she has options, but wow. This is not for the faint of heart!

@actinghopeful I’m sorry, and you’re right - this is not for the faint of heart. I haven’t posted rejections either and we’ve had our fair share too, so you are not alone. I struggle whether to post acceptances, but in the end I think it’s good to share information with those waiting to hear so they can plan accordingly or know where to look. It’s helped me try to soften the blow or manage expectations - for example when I knew acceptances were being called and my son didn’t get a call. Hang in there and definitely celebrate all acceptances (glad she has options) as all of these schools are incredibly hard to get into.

@MTmom019 Sometimes no news is good news, but @actorparent1 does make a good point to stay proactive and in the driver’s seat. BAL.

Thank you @HPDbfa and congratulations on the acceptance! It is always great to see those to keep track - and to celebrate good news, too!

@actinghopeful I suspect that lots of times there are declines we don’t hear about it here on the boards. So, for all of you out there silently disappointed (at least in the CC community) hang in there, let us know your highs and if it helps to commiserate, we’re here too.

@actinghopeful - My D was declined right out of the gate with her prescreen for EA at Chapman. She was quite shocked as she passed prescreens for CMU and Syracuse University. Totally disappointed but realized in the end that it wasn’t meant to be. Now she is excited about the other possibilities and trying to keep super busy over the next two weeks. Hang in there.

congrats @HPDbfa --its a great program. @actinghopeful It sounds like the gushing was genuine but some technicality (like a gender ratio) may have kept her on the wrong side of the list. The right one will find her.
