BFA Acting Class of 2023: preparation, prescreens, auditions, questions and support

@BelleHankmom I was wondering the same thing about CMU BFA Acting. MT calls definitely went out today; two kids in my son’s school got the calls. But we haven’t heard anything yet about acting calls. If anyone knows anything, please post - it would just be nice to know.

Oh Thanks for the information.

@actorparent1 is right about the support many of us got from posting rejections last year. But even more important- if everyone here only posted acceptances, think of how easy the folks reading this board next year will think the process is- or how bad the lurkers will feel because unlike what appears to be the posters’ experience, they are getting rejections. I know it’s not easy to put those rejections out there (even in anonymous form), but it is a tremendous act of kindness if you can. The rejections don’t mean your kids aren’t talented. All the kids who get to this level are incredibly talented.

BFA Acting calls did go out.

@wct acting calls went out for cmu?

Y’all, in terms of CMU, I’ve read that they call people over a period of time. If you didn’t get one, it’s not over. Don’t worry.

@hamdog123 thanks. In a way it would be easier if there was a firm yes or no answer. All of these schools - CMU and so many others - are great program but not the only ones, and maybe not even the right one for my S even if he did get in. In some ways I feel that a quick no could be better than long drawn out uncertainty. But, I’m just taking comfort that one way or another, May will come for all of us.

Also, if it’s like last year, WL will come via email/portal for CMU so it’s really not over until those come out!

Yesterday I read a post about someone who’s D chose LMU BA over some BFA options. Now I can’t find it and wanted to reach out to the parent. If you are reading please pm me…

I think you are looking for @marg928

@artkids when you say WL notifications come through portal did those come about before the regular decision date for CMU or did it come out simultaneously? My S portal reflected decision notification would be released on 3/30 which I believe is regular decision date.

So UNCSA sent out batches of rejections the last two Fridays at 9am… does anybody know if another one went out this morning?

Well, I missed the last 857 messages since I was last on here. I just want to send positive energy to everyone waiting on decisions. I recall March 16th being a huge day last year for our family. Within about a 4 hour period we heard from Fordham, Syracuse, UCLA, UCSD, and Kenyon. It started with a rejection from a school he loved and ended with an admission from a school he never thought he would get into. I remember our son singing “rejection, rejection, rejection,” as he logged into the portal for that last school. And in between those two bookends were two other acceptances and a rejection. What a crazy day. A year later and we are excited that he is coming home for spring break tomorrow morning. Time flies. I know these days of waiting feel especially long. Enjoy every moment together. These are precious and fleeting times.

Checking portals and looking at September, October, November dates on there when we submitted apps- seems like yesterday and cannot believe how quickly time has flown yet March feels like the l-o-o-n-gest month, like we are stuck in Waitingland. Here’s to good news for everyone!

I’m curious about the early action kids. We didn’t do any early action and I am wondering if your kids felt good about that process and found it to be successful for them. The earliest result that we had was a rolling admission for a January audition for Marymount Manhattan, which was successful. But I ask because by the time we got to Los Angeles Unifieds, I got the feeling from some of the info sessions that many of the seats had already been filled in the minds of the auditors( at least artistically). Which makes me wonder if going to an earlier Unifieds might be a good idea for next years kids. We loved Los Angeles though, the families and kids were really supportive and fun.

@BelleHankmom We did EA for one of my D’s top choices, The New School, auditioning in November and her acceptance in Dec has been very helpful, knowing we have one option. We also did the Jan auditions but still waiting for her other top choices. Definitely recommend doing EA when possible.

Anyone hear from UNCSA?

@BelleHankmom Thank you for asking that question. My D will be part of the class of 2024 audition cycle and that is something we were wondering about. And thank you for answering @NYDreammom! I hope to pay it forward next year!

My D also did early November audition and the acceptance from BW in December majorly took the pressure off. You’re able to see if your material works, how you feel when presenting and the reaction in the room. I highly recommend it— if I had it to do over, I would have added a couple more on campus auditions.

Here’s our rejection list (thus far) for those of you who are playing along. D applied RD for several of the big programs and was really hoping to get some kind of response. Her achilles heel is her dismal stats; barely cracking a 3.0 and and uneven SAT. She has a diagnosed LD and academics aren’t her strong suit. Her choice of Indiana was a surprise to me because she is mostly interested in urban schools, but she knew of its reputation as a top program. Radio-silence from them until early February when the email came (no in-person audition…nothin’). Loyola Chicago BA should have been a safety, but they too dismissed her application. As of today, nothing from BU or UCLA, and that includes no invitation to audition. We expect to be denied.
None of this was really a surprise to me. I knew from my older D’s experience that the smaller schools will at least look at the candidate, holistically and it’s possible to break through. A larger school (especially a UC) simply has to put all applications through an algorithm because the overall number of all applications is so huge. That being said, I think she could have tried harder to upgrade her SAT score. Her GPA was on a steady upward trend, but I don’t think she took seriously how much she needed to be well-rounded.

The good news is that 3 of her “Fit” schools accepted her early on (SCAD, Loyola New Orleans, and Columbia Chicago) and she’s fine with any of them (though all the Chicago schools have lost points this winter). Ultimately, our list was smaller than I would have liked, but my D was driving that bus. We’re still waiting on Pace FTVC, TNS, Roosevelt, Point Park, and Emerson. Berklee is on there too, because she’s a pop singer, but her weak musical foundations make this a long-shot. CalArts accepted her the other day, which has kind of blown my mind and gotten me rethinking everything.

For those 2020/2024 parents: there are some good Fit/Safeties out there. Learn to love them. Apply to them early so that you can hear back as soon as November (it did wonders for my D’s mood). Pay attention to the stat profile (from Navience, for example) for schools with more than 10K undergrads because they have to filter out a huge percentage of apps from the get-go. And go ahead and REACH. You never know. As our coach told us: “they have to take somebody, why not you?”
