BFA Acting Class of 2024: Preparation, Prescreens, Auditions, Questions and Support

@entertainersmom my kid’s auditioning for Otterbein’s BFA Acting program and I’d love to hear more about your son’s experience! I’m not sure how to message you (maybe I haven’t posted enough times?) Feel free to message me! Thanks!

@TenaciousC

If you have 15 replies then you can message someone. :smile:

@TenaciousC I will message you :slight_smile:

Thanks @entertainersmom - I replied to your message!

Well, @anastasiasmom, it looks like I’m almost there…

@anastasiasmom That was silly, should have replied to each of you separately. I guess this will be reply #15. Thanks for the tip!

Is anyone interested in creating/contributing to an Acting BFA audition experience thread? Reading through old ones is interesting and helpful and while I appreciate the MT threads I’d love an acting specific place to share and find info. I thought with unified auditions coming up it could be helpful to have a place here to share? It seems like there’s more info on MT, but also more to wade through that doesn’t always apply to acting. Maybe there’s already a thread like that here and I’ve missed it…

Also would be helpful to have a Unified Auditions thread so we can have a place to post details, walk on info, etc. I know there’s one on the MT thread, maybe we could just use that one?

What do you all think?

I agree @TenaciousC ! I almost started that exact thread the other day, after reading the one on the MT board, but realized my daughter hasn’t auditioned anywhere yet so I would have nothing to add yet. We should definitely have our own on this Theatre/Drama Majors page.

Same @BFAMom2024 but maybe if we start it, they will come? :wink:

We’re going to Ann Arbor for an on-campus Michigan audition Friday, so I’ll have something to post soon.

We’re also going to NYC unified auditions and I’ll be happy to post updates. Anyone else headed to NY next week?

@TenaciousC I’m sure there will be lots of people interested in how the Michigan audition goes! If you start it they will most definitely come. :smile:
We don’t start until Boston in a few weeks and then Chicago.

BAL to everyone!

@TenaciousC

Start the thread, we will add to it when we can and with Unifieds just around the corner it will be helpful for all of us. We will be in Chicago so we won’t have anything to add until the beginning of February for Unifieds information. But we will definitely add information on on-campus auditions.

We’ll be in Chicago for unifieds as well. If I learn anything in NY that might apply to Chicago I’ll be sure to let you know.

Which would be more helpful:

-one thread- Audition Experiences (on campus and unified) or

-two separate threads- Audition Experiences and Unified Auditions?

I don’t want anyone to have to wade through irrelevant info but I also find it helpful when everything is in one place.

Let me know what you all think.

I vote for one thread. I’m guessing a large percentage of people head to at least one of the Unified audition sites as well as some on campus auditions. Keeping it all in one thread will hopefully be clearer.

My vote - One thread

Done! Thanks for the input!

Thanks @ TenaciousC!!!

I’ve seen on here that schools may ask “where else are you applying?” during interview sessions and was pondering in my kid’s case if it would be a net pro or con to mention that they’re also applying to some BM music programs. I think positives are that it stands out and that being forthcoming generally comes across better than withholding. Potential negatives include coming across as not all-in on theater and potentially being nervous to speak about it for that reason.

@arkham

Suggestions that have been posted here are

  1. to list some of the schools but maybe not all of them

  2. to list schools that are similar to the one that you (your kid) is auditioning for. The second suggestion was to show that you (your kid) knows what kind of program they want. And realistically, a BM program could definitely be similar to an MT or an Acting program that incorporates vocal classes/lessons.

Those two are the only comments I’ve seen so far that answer that question. I guess it would come down to what you are comfortable telling them. Most auditors realize you are going to be applying to multiple programs.

Hopefully someone else can comment on this too.

Maybe I am cynical (okay, I am) but I feel like questions like “where else are you applying” and “are we your top choice school” are unfair tests where the answers can only hurt the applicant and I would answer with honesty and caution. For Acting auditions I would tell them the schools where you are applying for Acting. For MT or VP auditions I would tell them the VP and MT programs. I wouldn’t give the schools any reason to think the applicant wasn’t “all in” on their particular type of program.

This didn’t come up for my S but we talked about the potential for this to be asked and he settled on saying something akin to “where am I not applying?” and following that immediately with “but the reason I am interested in YOUR school is… xyz.” And just ducking the specific answer, which they don’t need anyway.

Welcome! and thank you for sharing!
