Break a Leg! to everyone out there auditioning this weekend!!
Thanks @anastasiasmom!
One down, quite a few to go… I posted some details about Michigan on the audition experiences page. Feel free to message me or post questions if you want more information.
We have a quick turnaround now- the kid has to catch up with schoolwork then we head to NYC on Thursday for unified auditions. My husband is taking care of our other kids like a boss- he even figured out how to use the instant pot.
Anyone have any idea what to expect at UNCSA auditions at NY Unifieds? I thought I read somewhere about the potential for a live callback, but I don’t see anything on their website about that (maybe i’m just looking in the wrong place). Also…has anyone received their audition time yet? My D just has a date still.
@muttsandMT we got the email w the audition reminder just this past Monday saying a specific audition time would be released closer to the date. (It seems pretty close to me lol). In my calendar for some reason I have 1:30pm listed. I’m not sure if that is a time or session I had requested or not? ?♀️ . I am betting we may get an email this week
Thanks, @HAHCx4 ! I sent you a PM.
@HAHCx4 and @muttsandMT
I believe you have either a morning or afternoon session with UNCSA. The afternoon audition starts at 1:30pm with an information session and then the audition. How long that takes I’m not sure and I don’t remember if there was any information on a callback. Looking forward to any information you have regarding that audition.
We didn’t audition for UNCSA last year - I just recall their info session was on the same floor at Ripley-Grier as my D’s DePaul audition (that floor was much less crowded and sane than Pearl studios)- we had finished the DePaul info session at 1 pm when all UNCSA parents and kids went in for theirs. Break legs!
Also have UNCSA in NYC and as @anastasiasmom said we chose the afternoon session which begins at 1:30 pm. We received a reminder email recently and I’m copying the info from that email here:
The audition is at Ripley-Grier Studios: 16H and 16L, located at 520 8th Ave, New York, NY 10018-6507.
The day begins at with check-in and an info session. Your specific audition time will be released closer to the date. Please plan to arrive early and leave time for callbacks if requested.
Review our audition tips in advance. While not required, we strongly encourage you to have a completed application file by your audition. The faculty request you bring a copy of your headshot(s) and resume to your audition.
(“Audition tips” is a link to more specific info from UNCSA about the audition expectations.)
See you in NYC!
So ready for unifieds. This is round 2 for me with older DD Jr vocal performance major at Hartt. Younger DD did get into VCU for theatre and in at George Mason. Depaul Friday, Carnegie Saturday & Fordham Sunday. She’ll audition at UNCSA the following Sunday. Then the waiting game beings. Also applied to non audition schools of UNC (my alma mater, but OOS), Northwestern, Columbia & Barnard.
We won’t be in NY for unifieds so BAL to everyone who will!! And congrats @yourmama99 on your dd’s acceptances so far!! That’s fantastic!!
I have a few Audition for Scholarship - BA Theatre experiences, should I post them on this discussion, Audition Exp BFA Acting class of 2024, or start a new discussion?
Thanks
@LamaDrama This is just my 2 cents, but I’d say post any audition experiences on the BFA Acting audition exp board- even though it’s a BA. I put BFA Acting in the title just to distinguish from MT. But of course you should feel free to post here if you’d rather. Thank you for sharing your experiences- I find it so helpful to have some idea what to expect going in to these situations.
I’d also say go ahead and post Directing (and tech if there’s an audition/portfolio review element) audition experiences on the BFA Acting if you’d like. For example, the Michigan audition I posted included directing students, who interviewed when the actors were giving monologues.
Anyone else have a student audition at Juilliard yesterday (1/12)? No callback for S; he knew it was a long shot but wanted to try. Only one male student got a callback out of over 100 applicants.
Heading to NYC Unifieds this Thursday evening for 8 auditions in 4 days! Passed prescreens for DePaul and Pace.
This process is not for the faint of heart.
Welcome! And absolutely agree that this process is not for the faint of heart! BAL to your son this weekend!!
@ThespianMitera Welcome! We weren’t at the Juilliard audition but will be at NYC unifieds doing 7 in 4, so I hear you. At least we won’t be bored!
I’ll take the Tech Portfolio Interview post challenge! So far my D has done a phone interview, in-person panel portfolio presentation interview, and a Skype interview.
Emerson, EA, 11/8, by phone. We had visited in October so she had a lot of info about the school already. Portfolio (20 images, max, with a short description of each) was uploaded a few days ahead of time. She happened to be the interviewer’s last call, so instead of 20 minutes, they talked for 40. It was pretty open-ended - portfolio presentation style with questions interspersed rather than a structured interview. My D felt good about it, and received an acceptance on 12/13.
Penn State, 12/14, in person panel interview (5-6 tech theatre faculty members from several departments). There were also Dance and MT auditions happening that day. We all started together in the theater space at 8:45 and then were split into the different groups after a brief presentation by a couple of faculty and a number of students. We didn’t encounter anyone from Dance or MT after the split, so I have no intel on their experiences. Tech applicants and parents were settled in a conference/display space with impressive student design work on display (sets, lighting, costume, etc.). There were current students from each area and year with us the whole time sharing info and answering questions - very informative! The Tech faculty also did a brief presentation before getting the interviews rolling.
Applicants were called one at a time and escorted to another room by one of the faculty. My D was called at 10:15. I chatted with the students and other waiting parents and learned even more about the program. My D finally returned at 11:00, which was a very lengthy interview (typical time was 20 minutes).
Once everyone had been seen, we had a tour of the main building spaces and the light lab. We had to leave to catch our flight, but the rest of the group went across campus by shuttle to see additional performance spaces. Even though she was sick, she felt good about the day and, even better, received an acceptance the following Saturday, 12/21.
Boston University, 1/12, Skype. We had visited BU in October as well, hence the Skype choice. Again, she uploaded her portfolio (collage style pages rather than single images by now) a few days ahead. This one was more of a structured interview (30 minutes) with one faculty member. Sounds like he had a set of specific questions ready to go. My D felt less confident and was second-guessing the productions she picked to discuss afterward. She definitely preferred the in-person format with her printed portfolio to go through as a presentation. Fortunately, she only has one other Skype interview (Pace, also visited in October) and the rest are in person.
We’ve got lots of travel weekends ahead – Rutgers, then DePaul & CMU at Chicago Unifieds, U Mich & CCM, Missouri State, and UNCSA. Plus the Pace Skype…and U of Arizona (digital portfolio submitted but no interview).
BAL, everyone!
Congrats to your d on her Emerson and Penn State acceptances! That’s fantastic!!! And thank you for sharing the experiences here. We look forward to hearing more about her journey!!!
Congratulations @Loganator that’s excellent! Thanks for posting tech interview info.
Happy for your D @Loganator ! Sounds like she’s got this with two great offers already and I’m sure she’ll be happy wherever she ends up.
Thank you, @CaMom13 , @TenaciousC , and @anastasiasmom! I am very excited for her so far because we really had no idea what to expect. She finished the last Rutgers supplement for Mason Gross tonight and submitted…deadline is tomorrow, and we are booked to be there on the 25th/26th, which are the only tech interview days so I hope they confirm her choice!
