@LamaDrama we were at NYU today and we didn’t reformat (though the format we used was very similar) and it was fine. Nobody even noticed as far as I can tell. Apparently many of the auditors look at the resume and head shot then give them back, so don’t even sweat it!
@Tenacious C. Thanks so much for the update. BAL to your fabulous kid. And a cocktail for you!
For those of you at Unifieds, just a head’s up that the Women’s March is today. 2 years ago my D had a Fordham audition in the morning and Marymount Manhattan at 12:30. We did not take the Women’s March into account, and took an Uber. The quick trip turned into almost an hour. We barely made it on time. If you have to travel anywhere close to the route, take the subway! It’s really not hard if you’re not used to it - there are plenty of apps to help, but we just use Google Maps. It’s what my daughter who lives there now uses. Sadly, she didn’t live there then & we didn’t know!
Break legs to everyone auditioning this weekend!
Thanks for this advice, which I sorely wish I’d seen this morning! We had the EXACT same experience traveling from the Minnesota audition to MMC. We made it on time, but it wasn’t pretty.
@yourmomma @NYDreammom In regard to the DePaul auditions, do you know how long of a monologue they do in person? It was one minute for the prescreen, but is it 90 seconds in person? And are the strict about the time? TIA
@meohmyoh The in-person monologue had to be one of the prescreen monologues- at least last year was the case, you can check the website for the audition instructions. So my D chose to do her contemporary for the audition, therefore same length as the prescreen.
@NYDreammom Thank you. That seems so short for on campus. Good to know.
@meohmyoh The monologue is only one part of the audition- they have movement, and the biggest component is the scene work where they rehearse and then present. Compared to other 10-minute auditions DePaul takes their time to see various aspects of all candidates. BAL!
@NYDreammom Thank you. My son missed the conference call, but it doesn’t seem like there is anything he can prepare for anyway.
@meohmyoh Yes, just the monologue. The scene work is assigned. Being himself is all he needs. We had no idea what to expect last year and it turned out to be my D’s favorite audition. They do the monologue in front of everyone else but have the movement first as a warm up.
Just checked the DePaul audition information. Your monologue for the callback audition has to be one of the monologues on your prescreen.
Chicago Unifieds are just around the corner (just over a week away) and I was wondering about walking to locations at different hotels. I found this comment on the MT thread in response to a question about walking from the Palmer House to Joffrey. If anyone else has any input it would be appreciated. Any safety tips when walking or taking a taxi or uber?
from LadyMjolnir - Pretty much everything in Chicago is walkable, and thankfully the weather is looking pretty good (there have been years with pure ice and six-foot snowdrifts! egad) but it is advisable to wear your dance clothes under heavy layers and boots, or carry them separately and change at the venue–There are bathrooms everywhere so quick changes are easy to do.
We live in Chicago and yes, walkable especially in the Loop. I would use public transportation whenever possible if you have to go further vs Lyft (better in Chicago than Uber) as there is a lot of traffic all the time, again, especially in the Loop. Palmer to Joffrey is less than 10 min walk. And yes, Chicago is safe, we’ve never had issues. As in any big city be aware of your surroundings.
Year before last we used Lyft to get back & forth to the Hyatt (we stayed at Palmer House) where D had several auditions because it was very cold. It was very inexpensive because it wasn’t far. We were able to walk to the Marriott where she had 1 audition.
I’ve heard that the Palmer House will have a list of the schools at their hotel and the room number(s) they are in. Does anyone know if any of the other hotels provide a list of colleges that are at their hotel for Chicago unifieds?
Hey all, question for you guys. For those of you who auditioned for UNCSA, what type of questions did you get asked in the room? Thanks!
At UNCSA my kid was asked “Why do you want to come to this school?” and “Where do you feel you need to grow as an artist?”
There’s a pretty thorough review on the BFA Acting Audition Experiences thread.
For those who are interested in UNCSA, Backstage (on Facebook) interviewed Scott Zigler, School of Drama Dean. He answers questions and talks a little bit about the auditions and program at UNCSA.
I tried to attach the link, but CC wouldn’t accept it.
To watch, go to the Backstage page on Facebook (picture is a lowercase b with a red star), and you should find it there under videos. The interview was on January 16
Thanks everyone!
Any suggestions for places to eat while in Chicago for unified auditions?
