Does anyone know if the fact that my DS is from a bi cultural family would matter to admissions? (Japanese mom and caucasian, American dad). He is thinking about including that in his essay and has heard it could help his chances for UC school. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

UCs do not consider race or ethnicity in admissions.

However, if there is an unusual or interesting story that the student can write in the essay, it may influence the essay reader. But the bar for “unusual or interesting story” is probably pretty high, since multiethnic people are rather common in California.

Sort of. Asians are over represented in college admissions. Many colleges want diversity, and will limit the number of Asians they accept. Fortunately for you, your DS can hide your Asian roots. In my case, the last name gives it away.

This is a debatable point.
