He can, and likely will.
And not to be pedantic, but the media totally gets the following incorrect: HRH is not a title; it’s a style. the title is Prince and Duke of Sussex.

This.
I want to channel little Draco Malfoy in the first Harry Potter movie: “one has STAFF for that!”.
It’s got to have something to do with the fact that what they are famous for, being royal, really only exists in people’s heads. The family hasn’t acquired money or fame through their talents, be it in business, sports or a creative industry, as other famous people do. They have the money and the fame, and are sought after to cut ribbons, because people in the UK, by large, want to have a royal family, and they are the descendants. The people of the UK could decide they want a republic tomorrow. (Unlikely? I happen to agree, but who of us would have predicted Brexit?). They could decide to nationalise the great houses, the duchy of Cornwall…they really have very little private income that doesn’t have to do with being royal or the descendants of royals. There are some models to be found in other European monarchies, but it seems that both “heirs” and “spares” these days frequently struggle with the mismatch of modern notions of equality and democracy and ancient traditions of monarchy.
Thanks @skieurope for the differentiation between the 2.
I agree that this sort of stepping back probably makes the Queen and Heirs quite nervous. I know they bring in money, but their are a lot of people who don’t want a monarchy. This sort of defection, by a senior royal, only adds to the question why the public even bothers.
But I guess Edward did worse and the monarchy survived, but that was a different time.
I know I am in the minority here but some of this seems “Grand” and some of this seems silly. The queen looked gorgeous with her crown on. But that’s the problem… It’s 2020 and she is wearing a crown… Lol. I think she looks much better in her hat.
Anyway… There was a statement that Harry will try to make it financially and is taking his $30-40 million dollars and attempt to “make it” on his own… Like really…
Give me a few million and I will make it on my own very nicely ?.
I never thought she was a good match for Harry. And hasn’t she distanced herself from all of her family, except for Doria? And now Harry gets distanced from his family. Her first marriage didn’t last long, and I don’t see this one lasting, either.
I’d distance myself too if my family was making the kinds of comments Meghan’s father and half-sister have apparently made to the press.
Yeah, but there is no such thing as bad publicity for M&H. Being in the media is crucial.
If they cannot live in Canada for more than 183 days, what will the do when Archie reaches school age?
@somemom m good point about Archie. Maybe then they go back to the U.K.
I’ve separated myself from my family, so h9ld no judgement there. That is something we can’t even begin to understand about her life.
It’s too bad they couldn’t just ignore the tabloids.
Her family wasn’t that interested in her until she started dating Harry. Even when she was in Suits they didn’t spend much time on her. Don’t blame her for making the cut final.
But yeah, a lonely life if they truly just have their little family and don’t hang out with all the cousins in England. Above someone said that Wills and Harry hadn’t been close to Diana’s family after her death, but I think that’s not accurate. I think one of Diana’s sister is a godmother to one of Wills’ kids, and there have been some weddings on that side of the family where the Royals attended. I think they see those relatives more than I see my cousins and I don’t feel estranged from mine.
I think that William & Harry haven’t been particularly close to their uncle, the Earl of Spencer, but part of that has to do with the fact that he lived abroad for a time after Diana’s death. I get the impression that they are close to their mother’s sisters & their families. In fact, it brought me to tears when H&M married and his aunt, Jane Fellowes, was exited from the church early to stand with Charles, Doria Ragland, wedding party, etc. as the stand-in for Diana as they were waved off for their carriage ride by those close family. Both of Diana’s sisters are pictured in the christening photos for Archie.
Meghan’s father is claiming that Meghan lived with him throughout her childhood, that he was the one who paid for her Northwestern education and still helped with supporting her while she was a struggling actress. That they were talking and close right up until the time she met Harry.
I have no idea what people’s personal relationships are so I can’t answer that.
The behavior of Megan’s father has been absolutely disgraceful. I just cannot believe one word that comes out of his mouth. If he has any shred of credibility (which IMO he does not), it’s only because the behavior of his daughter Samantha has been even worse. So, yeah, who knows what the exact truth is, but the Markle side of the family has forfeited the right to be taken seriously.
I’m fortunate to have good relations with my family, as does my H, but in my experience there are people who just cannot accept/understand that some people truly do have toxic family members, and the only way to maintain sanity is to create healthy boundaries, including, if necessary, cutting off all contact.
@roycroftmom ,
It appears Prince Harry is pretty close to his mother’s side.
Prince William has also kept in contact with the Spencer.
Nobody claimed the plan was well thought-out.
Archie is a baby. They have plenty of time to come up with a plan for his schooling. People move around and aren’t tied to one spot, especially those with means.
It is such a downer to read/hear/see that so many people are almost wishing for failure for them.
I heard this info on a podcast this weekend and looked up this article for more input - not sure how legit this is. This shows in 2017 that Harry worked barely 100 days during the year. I heard that 2018 was even less. He is basically in line to be the pinch hitter for William. What kind of life is that if you have any drive?

I personally would love to see a modern, fresh approach blended with the good aspects of royalty. Maybe this will be the start of that trend.
Does no one think that this is just a temporary thing and they will be back in a few years (on purpose)?
I am surprised that so many people comment on this as if they 1) know any of the main characters personally 2) know any “facts” other than what is on official royal websites. Everything the media prints about all of these people is biased and totally tainted.
None of us know why they did anything, or how well thought out this was.
I wonder how much of this is by choice, though? I don’t know the answer. I would think that one could have one’s pet projects and causes and have impact there. For example, Charles’ interests in environmental concerns, architecture and urban planning.
