Bio PhD: Rockefeller University?

All through school, D has been convinced she wanted to go into genetics/genomics. Now that she’s done more in Dr Earley’s lab (animal behavior, ecology, conservation, etc.), she’s become more interested in that. She’s also interested in neurobiology/neuroscience because of her minor in psychology.

Since she’s not really sure which direction she wants to take in research at this point, she’s looking at schools with a broad umbrella program that would allow her to pick pretty much any direction during her second year.

Rockefeller University has suddenly skyrocketed to the top of her list. I never knew much, if anything, about it until I started doing some research of my own. It looks fabulous, and she’s always wanted to live in NYC. It really sounds like a perfect fit for her, at least on paper.

Does anybody have any personal experiences: visits, talks with people there, students who applied or decided to attend?

I work with a scientific organization closely affiliated with a number of Rockefeller scientists. While small, it is a very fine university and home to a recent Nobel Laureate. I think their strongest program is in cell biology, but I can’t imagine they’re not well-regarded across the board.
