Could anyone tell me how strong is Reed's Biochem & Molecular Bio department? How many majors are there in a class? What do they think about their choice? :)

Oh, and could one do 3 years of Biochem&MolBio and then do another 2 years studying Biomedical Engineering at Columbia?

I don’t know exactly how many people major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, but the Sciences are extremely strong at Reed-especially Biology. The Biochemistry programme itself is extremely hard, so while you may go onto a top graduate school, you may very well end up with a 2.8 GPA-which is the average for Biochemistry majors. However, as you probably already know, Reed isn’t just about the grades you earn, and that’s why Reedies go onto do wonderful things despite their deflated grades.

Engineering is definitely a possibility, as long as you don’t depend on Financial Aid. If you do, the process becomes much tougher. You can always take up Engineering at the Masters level after graduating from Reed though.

There’s plenty of information available online, that I recommend persuing before you ask people on CC.

I would avoid relying solely on statistics, but Reed is currently #2 in the nation in the production of students who eventually get PhDs in Biology. They’re #3 overall.

[REED COLLEGE PHD PRODUCTIVITY](Doctoral Degree Productivity - Institutional Research - Reed College)

Aside from that, Reed is notorious for its incredibly strong life science program.

Thanks for the link, but I already knew these things (from browsing their site and checking their brochure). I just wanted some personal opinions.

CC is virtually devoid of actual Reedies. Almost everyone is a prospie/admitted student but not yet attending (as Paradox and myself are).

I recommend you asking on Reed’s LiveJournal page: Reedwatcher. It’s full of both currents students and alumni (so you’ll find biology majors that have graduated and know the Reed experience in-and-out). Make sure you follow the proper guidelines to asking a prospie question.

my daughter majored in bio- and published her thesis in '06.
I believe thesis links are on the commencement web site

For personal opinions look at the Reed LJ

Are you applying this year? Reed has this neat e-mail address called writeareedie@reed.edu, where you can address specific questions you have to students instead of the administration. Although, I haven’t used it, I suggest you do because both LiveJournal and Facebook can die on you when you pose Reedies questions. Check out all of Reed’s class specific groups (The 2014 one is private, but the others are open) and Reed’s fan page on Facebook because the questions you posed might have been answered earlier by someone.

i am an interested student. i really like their educational philosophy and am interested in applying to reed in the fall but i have a lot of concerns about the rigors of Reed, can someone chime in on the rigor of premed at Reed

this a link i found and i find it a real turnoff that a 3.4 and 30 MCAT is the average for the accepted applicant.

IMO a 3.4 and 30 MCAT would probably get that person into a low tier medical school. My goal is to go a top 10-20 medical school after undergrad.

would you guys recommend me picking a mid tier public school. for example UC Davis over Reed to avoid very hard curriculum? if my goal is to go to a very prestigous medical school

Did you see this page (MDs column)?

[REED COLLEGE LIFE AFTER REED](Life After Reed - Institutional Research - Reed College)

In theory, a harder curriculum could mean a higher MCAT score.

^^^^^^
wow thank you for the link.

i am on the bandwagon for Reed College, now i got to get my parents to believe me that a private school might be the same price as a public school. they have this old stereotype that a private school will always cost more.

Can anyone chance me?

Essays: (i kind of integrated the 4 topics below into my two essays)
- when i was a freshman my parents got in an accident and i had to start taking care of my whole family. what i mean is that my chores got tripled, i needed to help my parents move through the house, and i had to walk my bro to school before i went. My school and his school are in 2 opposte directions.
- i also wrote about how the envioronment i grew up in has shaped me to be a strong perservering leader and how people see me as a leader not because of my large frame ( i am 6’4) but because of the attidude i have when i am in the room.
- how my parents accident coupled with my volunteering at the hospital and retirement has changed my outlook on life and how i found my true calling which is medicine because God has blessed me with intelligence and lots of empathy towards the needy and weak.
- i also included in my essay a great quote from one of a famous surgeon (i am drawing a blank on his name right now) but it said " i was never the smartest in med school, but what i lacked in ability i made up with through discipline." i think this quote really applies to me and i explained why.
