I was wondering if anyone had any experience with Marylands new bioengineering program. How big are the classes? What jobs are the graduates getting? What graduate schools are they going to? Is it a good major for a pre-med? I am a little nervous about having a tough time getting a high GPA for medical school and about having free time to volunteer. Any information or insights about this department would be much appreciated. Also I was curious if anyone had any information about majoring in any engineering discipline and then going to medical school. I am very interested in engineering but people seem to keep saying its not advisable for someone who hopes to go to medical school. Again, thanks for your help.

“I am very interested in engineering but people seem to keep saying it’s not advisable for … medical school”

Why not? I sounds good to me. I’m doing premed, and I’m in the School of Music! Been playing piano since I was 5. I should be a wiz with the scalpel :)

BioE not good for pre-med? I’m not sure where you heard that from at all. A good percentage of BioE are pre-med, so you wouldn’t be alone. I’m aerospace engineering myself, but from talking to other ppl in BioE, it seems that it actually makes it easier to get into med school because the BioE curriculum is more rigorous than a regular Bio major and gives you an advantage when applying to med school. Yea, the department’s new, but its still pretty respectable. If you were serious on your med school thing, you could still do BioE and have time to volunteer or whatever would help you with that, at the very least during winters and summers. And overall, it seems like the overall morale is much better in the engineering school than in the Bio department. Everyone in engineering helps each other out and works together, while I’ve heard the complete opposite from those in Bio majors about some of their classmates and profs. But then again, do what you think would be best for your situation because as you can probably tell, I’m a bit biased towards the engineering route! :)

I definitely would recommend BioE. I’m a BioE major and I’ve liked it so far. Granted, I just finished my freshman year so I’ve only taken one BioE class, but I have older friends in the department and most people like it. The classes I took in the major were big because they were courses that every freshman engineer had to take, but the more advanced BioE specific classes arent too big. I’m not pre-med but I know that BioE is a significantly tougher major than regular bio. That should help set you apart when you apply to medical school.

Also, I agree with the orchdork7810 that the engineering school is a great environment. Its not all nerds like you might expect and most people are friends or at least get along with each other. There’s no cut-throat competition at all.

I’m doing BioE and pre-med! It just seemed logical to do them together, considering I’ll be applying to med school afterwards as well. Seemed like it’d give me a nice head start for it!
