Bioengineering premed

I'm a rising senior who plans on applying to Penn SEAS for bioengineering premed. However, I was wondering how difficult this major was compared to other popular premed majors such as biology and BBB. I also might plan to switch to CAS biology if I find it more attractive than bioengineering, so I was wondering how easy it is to do so.

bump. i want this question answered too

it’s easier if you like the subject matter, harder if you don’t… not sure how else to put this (inherently engineering is more complicated but some people like bioengineering subjects, like fluid dynamics things, more so than advanced cell signaling pathways, for example)

Yes, but I here GPA’s for engineering majors are ridiculously low. Should I be worried?

whoops hear

Well from what I’ve heard (I’m in the same boat as you, OP) the GPAs may be lower, but the average person accepted to medical school had something like a 3.3 or some other ridiculously low number. I’m planning on doing Bioengineering as a premed and I’ll just hope it all works out for the best :)

also remember that penn bioengineering offers two routes, one the bachelor of science in bioengineering and the other the bachelor of applied science in biomedical science

the second has less of the “hardcore” (more difficult) engineering requirements and is commonly pursued by folks who like bioengineering but don’t wish to enter the industry when they graduate… like premeds, or me

im thinking of pursing BME mainly as a backup if i choose not to pursue MedSchool. would the BA in Biomedical Science still count as an engineering degree? like if i wanted to go to grad school for BME?

i just found it on the penn website. this should help the OP too.

[Penn Engineering - Bioengineering Major](Majors)

This is a really cool program offered by Penn since for the first two years the classes are the same and you can switch between the BS and BAS degrees as your “career plans become clearer”

I wonder if other schools have this…

so is the BAS with biomedical major is easier than bioengineering in terms of work load/higher GPA’s/etc?

so doing the biomedical science major allows more flexibility in engineering electives, which allows for avoidance of some of the hardest bioengineering classes…

but if one were to pick some reasonably challenging engineering classes… then there may be no substantial difference in workload or gpa

ah I see! That makes sense. Thanks!
