biog 1440 textbook - custom?

so i'm shopping for textbooks, and i saw that the intro to comparative physiology class has a required textbook that says: CUSTOM BIOLOGY W/MASTERINGBIOLOGY ACCESS
REECE / SKU: 9781256082668

what does the CUSTOM mean? does it mean that i can only get that version from the cornell store, and no where else? i tried searching for the same book on amazon, but found no results.

thanks for any input

also, for chem 2070, the lab packet is currently ‘out of stock’. as i’m assuming that this is a required material, how do i get around this?

and would it be wise to rent the chem 2070 textbook instead of buying a new one? (however, the rental is also currently out of stock)

Custom generally means the textbook is abridged or has additional chapters. If it’s abridged, they took out stuff that won’t be covered in the class to make the text cheaper. If it has additional chapters or comes with additional stuff like CDs, Workbook, etc, then it might be more expensive if you only use the textbook.

The lab packet for Chem 2070 IS REQUIRED. It’s your lab manual and will be in stock ONLY in the Cornell store when the school year starts. You could cheap it out and get a friend’s and photocopy about 20-40 pages of it.
Renting is a matter of preference. If you’re only going to use the textbook for this or this and CHEM 2080, renting is cheaper especially if the textbook goes out of edition, usually, and can’t be sold back to the store if you instead bought the book.
For this class however, you can actually buy an older version, one or two editions prior and save money [60-80%]. The material is practically the same. The professor even lends a copy of the current edition to the library that can be checked out for 2-3 hours in case you do need the current copy.
