Biology and Chemistry Professors

Can anyone give me praise or criticism on any of the biology or chemistry professors? Thanks!

And add Gilson to the list of people that can be preferred over Spell. He may be doing case-based as well. The list of teachers are “staff” (Escobar, who sucks. My guess is that Eisen isn’t teaching and is not one of the “staff”), Spell, Passalaucqua, and Gilson. Gilson and Passalauqua priority and Spell last (great lecturer, but class is too stereotypical, doesn’t truly encourage learning, unfair test questions. Other 2 are better for learning purposes and will probably design fair exams). Calabrese is only okay. Much better than Escobar, but still at bottom of list.

so rank them in order of your personal preferences

what about holzman and what does staff mean?

also if i have to choose between taking mulford for chem and gilford for bio what do u suggest

I did, but I’ll do it again. Passalaucqua, Gilson, Spell, Calabrese and “staff” (likely Escobar). Staff=them not knowing the prof. or not wanting to reveal them for various reasons. Oh, I thought you were going to double up. If not, take chemistry this year. Choose whoever you want.

Morkin and Mulford tie for chem, but I prefer Morkin, Hill is pretty good too, but isn’t as available as the other two.

Try your hardest to get Spell for biol 141/142 and mulford for 141/142, or take freshmen orgo if you already have ap chem credit, and don’t take biol 141 if u already have ap bio credit (just take biol 142 + upper level bio). If you don’t have credit for either, you’ll be glad down the line u took these classes w/ these profs. Stay away from Escobar for biol 141, or Liotta and Gallivan for orgo, but any of the three gen chem lecturues (mulford, weaver, morkin) are fine. Spell and Mulford may seem a bit challenging at first, but it’s that challenge that’ll keep you engaged and focused, as well as training u to get used to rigor early on. Also, you’ll get a more thorough understand of these 2 subjects, which definitely goes a long way in helping u get a good score on the mcat (which is just as important as ur gpa in getting into med school, so don’t sacrifice one for the other).

I still recommend Passalaucqua over Spell unless you have a schedule conflict. The class is run much better and people learn more. It’s reasonably challenging workload (and come on, if you’re a pre-med, case studies r cool) and the tests are fairer. But Spell makes a nice back-up.
