Biology/Biomedical Sciences Applicants 2008

Really? They asked me for 5 names, and I got 2 of them out of my 4 faculty interviews. Wait, you're interviewing on Friday? All of mine are on Thursday.

Sorry, I'm interviewing on Thursday also. I sent in a total of 13 names and got 2 from that list (3 total). I sent in 5 names initially, but then got an email asking for more, so I sent in 8 more names.

Aevertts,

It sounds like the first 5 names you chose were the "big shots" that are too busy and that's why they requested more names. Did you request a lot of people from Sloan-Kettering?

To All:
I requested 5 people and I am interviewing with 2 of those. I am also interviewing with other 2 that I did not request. (4 total). Those interviews will be on Thursday. Then on Friday I should interview with some people in my second choice (immunolog) but I have no information about this. In fact I have not heard anything since I submitted the names of people I would like to interview with.

For me Cornell Weill is definitely one of my top choices. But I only applied to 6 schools and already have a reject from Rockefeller which was my top choice.

That's funny, they didn't ask me who I wanted to interview with, but I'm interviewing with 4 of the people whose research I'm most interested in. Cornell's a great school, but I'm withholding my judgement til I've seen it more from the student side. I've been a tech there for 2.5 years, and you get a very different sense of the place as an employee.

Aevertts - i'm pretty sure they do guarantee housing for as long as it takes, and while it's "cheap" by upper east side NY standards, I think I recall my grad students paying like, $800 a month EACH for a 3-bedroom, so it's still not "cheap".

maco0708: I did ask to meet some well known faculty, so you're probably right. I managed to land an interview with Thomas Kelly though!

aldo003b: Thanks a lot for the housing info. I guess I could live with that price, but it's really not ideal.

I have a question about interview visits. I have not heard from the last three schools where I've interviewed, despite the fact that over a week has passed since the last visit. I had a wonderful time at those visits, and some of those schools are definitely top choices for me. From personal experience and reading this board, I know most programs respond within a week about admission. I'd really like to know if other people have heard back from these specific programs, so that I can change my interviewing style if I'm creating a bad impression.

Has anyone who attended Princeton MolBio 2/1, Harvard MCB 2/7, or MIT Bio 2/11 been offered admission? Don't be afraid to make me look bad :) Thanks for your help!

snowcap: i'm guessing, and could be completely wrong, but do those schools have multiple recruitment weekends? they might wait until they're done with all the weekends before they make offers (at least i hope so, because i'm in a similar boat!).

aevertts: i saw the cornell housing, and i was actually impressed with the prices they offered, especially for the location. also, if you get a corner unit high up, you'll have a great view.

Hey snowcapk. I'm in the same boat. I've interviewed at 3 schools so far and haven't heard back. 2 of the schools said around 2-3 weeks and its been more than 3 weeks for the first one so far (Columbia). I don't think that the other people I interviewed with (at least the ones i'm facebook friends with) have heard back yet either, so i'm trying not to read too much into it??

snowcapk,

how was MIT's weekend?

Hi everyone,

I received a call from WashU on Friday from the Admissions chair of Molecular Cell Biology offering admission to the programme. Its a great place, amazing programme and as someone else noted, the stipend is very competitive...

I interviewed on 2/8 at WashU.

MIT's weekend was great! Same format as other weekends basically, except you stay with a grad student. What makes their program unique is that you have a semester of just coursework, followed by a month of professors' research talks, then several one-month rotations. I think it's a great idea, but I am still considering what it would mean for finding work this summer. (So much for an early first rotation.) I got to interview with the rockstar professors I asked to meet, so that's pretty awesome. First-years have a sweet new lounge with pool table, ping-pong table, computer lab, soft couches...very nice! I heard some hilarious stories about places they're not allowed to hold the annual retreat anymore :) Good times.

did any of the rockstar professors grill you during the interview?

Kael, I was really impressed with WashU. Did you meet up with autocell that weekend?

Maco, and others going to Weill/Cornell/SK tomorrow - I'm visiting pharmacology as my primary, but BCMB also asked me to interview with them since I put them as second on my application. It seems like a lot of the visit may involve recruits from all of the different programs.

tv, nope, no grilling. Didn't know an answer in one interview but finished responding in the thank-you note. That's been par for the course though...heh, maybe I am interviewing badly.

nickalternate,

Did you get any additional information from your secondary program regarding interviews? I haven't heard anything since the first e-mail. I am curious where they are going squeeze those interviews on Friday.

I also really enjoyed the MIT weekend! The professors were all very down to earth and approachable, and I like the program format of intense classes followed by short rotations. All in all, MIT seemed like a fun-loving, high intensity (in terms of science) place!

Just got a call from one of the profs at Wash U officially accepting me after interviewing this past weekend. Pretty exciting.

Accepted : UCSD-pchem, WashU-compbio
Interviews: UCSC-biochem, WakeForest-biochem
Waiting: MIT-compbio, UW-bioeng, RICE-bioeng

haha maco, we're both here right now, probably saw each other. not much info from the second program, but they did send me a name and a time to interview.
