Anyone going to NYU tomorrow? Maybe I can forget it's Valentines day...

To all you UCSD BMS hopefuls, they said they will send out more interview invitations either next week or the week after that. I got my fingers crossed!

Does anyone have any general thoughts/opinions on how much the BBS faculty at Harvard care about grad student education, and how tight-knit the student community feels compared to other schools like UC Berkeley, MIT, etc?

Well, obviously I can't compare it directly to other schools, since I haven't been a graduate student at other schools. Faculty members care quite a bit about graduate education, and they tend to fall all over themselves to teach BBS classes and participate in BBS events. This is because there are many more professors in BBS than there are students, so professors have to put themselves out there in order to get students to rotate in and join their labs. Students are a commodity at Harvard, and it's nice to be on that end of supply and demand.

Most of the students form a very cohesive group. It's tough for me to comment beyond that, because my lab is at Mass General Hospital, which is far away from the Longwood Medical quad where most HMS labs are located. Since I'm far away, I don't go out to lunch or drinks with the people in my program now that we're not taking classes together.

Many people at other interviews will tell you in hushed tones that Harvard is a cutthroat place where people don't collaborate and graduate students aren't cared for. I have emphatically not had this experience.

How long do you think it typically takes for a school to accept/reject you after interviewing with them? If they have more interview weekends left, do they usually wait until after they are all finished to issue acceptances or do they usually tell you right away?
[/quote]
I have seen it both ways. Some schools will contact you within a week of the interview if you are in, some schools explicitly say they are going to wait until everyone has interviewed to make final decisions.

Just a funny update, the school that "explicitly" said they were going to wait until everyone was interviewed sent me an acceptance letter yesterday (4 days after the interview and over a week before the next interview) so yeah...I guess I have not seen it both ways.:)

To Cornelli2008

What program are you applying to?
Do you know anything about NYU Sackler admissions for international students?

Thank you

Hi, everybody, I am an international student in Asia. I applied to the neuroscience program in several universities but haven't got their notifications. If there is someone who applied to the same program as me, please give me some information. Thank you.

UIUC, USC, JHM, UChicago, UPitt, UMaryland-College Park, Iowa State Univ,
Univ of Utah, Tufts

Wish everybody here the best of luck!

Besides, I applied to the biomedical sciences program at these universities.

Waiting: Harvard HBTM, BCM DB , UTSW , Northwestern IGP ,Vanderbilt IGP ,NY-Sackler, CMU, Weill Cornell,
Rejected: JHU CMM, UCLA, Duke
Interview: IUPUI, SUNY-SB.

Could anybody familiar with IUPUI(the medical school) tell me about its strength of faculty and facilities?

Lily - when did you hear from Stony Brook?

I received the email from Stony Brook on Feb, 5th. After replying about the proposed date I can take the interview, I haven't received any information from them...
How about you?

I've heard nothing, but there were issues regarding my application (they claimed they didn't have it, and then they found it 2 days after the deadline) so I don't really know, maybe it's just at the bottom of the pile and they haven't gotten to it? I can't be too stressed cuz I've been accepted elsewhere, but I was really excited about a lot of work being done by Stony Brook's associates @ Brookhaven National Labs.

Just got back from my Wash U interview for comp bio. The program was amazing. The other prospective students were really great too. One of the guys I interviewed with asked me if I had any other offers. I told him about UCSD and it turned out he had done his postdoc under the guy I want to go work without there. He essentially told me to come to Wash U for grad school and do a postdoc out at UCSD in McCammon's group. My interests are in computational chemistry/biology fyi. I also was notified I have an interview at UCSC in the biochem dept. There are some prof's working on nanopores out there. The stipend is VERY nice at Wash U. Going to be interesting these next few weeks. Still haven't heard from Rice or UW for bioengineering progs.

Anyone going to Weill Cornell BCMB this Wednesday-Saturday?

anyone know why stanford's interview weekend is longer than most other schools?

masta_ace,

I am going to the Cornell Weill interview. Do they have just one interview weekend?

I'll be at Weill Cornell also. Should be a good time.

I'll be @ Weill as well! Though, for Neurosci, not BCMB. Either of you guys(aevertts or maco) in oncology-type stuff? If so, tell me who you're interviewing with, my boss does interviews for that program, I think. and to Maco, i know for neuro they have only one weekend, with 20 interviewees. I would imagine since BCMB is bigger you'll either have more fellow interviewees, or there's more than one weekend, I can ask my grad students when I get back to the lab (i currently work @ weill)

To those who interview at Cornell Weill:

Have you specified a "second choice" department in your application?
My primary interviews are with BCMB but I also got an invitation from my second choice (immunolog) and I should have few interviews with them on Friday.

Are you guys interviewing with multiple departments?

I think Cornell BCMB only has one interview weekend, although I may be wrong. I'm not sure if I specified a "second choice" department, as I am only interested in their BCMB program anyways.

How does Weill Cornell rank on your lists? Would it be somewhere that would be in top contention as one of your choices? Right now I think my top choices would be either Cornell or UT Southwestern, but we'll see how it turns out this weekend.

I'm interviewing with just BCMB. For some reason Weill Cornell asked for a huge number of names (over 10) and I only have 3 faculty interviews on Friday.

I'm really curious about the student housing. If they guarantee housing for 5 years then it wouldn't be so bad.
