Biology/Biomedical Sciences Applicants 2008

I dunno, the scale for biochem is pretty wacky...what percentile does that come out to? I see your point about demonstrating some biochem knowledge, but maybe it would be better if your transcript did the talking. Have you taken any coursework in those subjects?

Yeah, it is the 53% I think I am probably just not going to report it.

i skimmed over this thread and it reminded me of all the stress that i went through last year, haha. don't worry guys, it will only get more stressful :)

joking aside, i see that quite a few people are applying for upenn. i'm currently a 1st year in cancer biology (formerly known as cell growth and cancer) within the CAMB umbrella program and i'm pretty happy with the program. if you guys have a particular question about the program, feel free to drop a question. i'm an international as well so i might be able to offer some comments for some of you int'l applicants. btw, upenn doesn't invite international students for interviews, which makes it really hard for the applicants to decide, and it was one of the things that made me hesitant about coming to upenn... but i have no regrets at all now- well maybe the weather.

hey mollie, it's good to see you being helpful as always.

Thanks for the words of encouragement ccmad, we all wish we could chill out and let the the invites roll but you know how it is.

How is everyone else doing with your applications? I feel like I'm giving away my first born with each one and have only submitted 3/13. I will have to get cracking b/ I have 7 due on the 14/15th. At least I have UCSF finished that is my top choice so the rest somehow seem less important.

8/9, just Berkeley to go. When my recommenders started getting ahead of me, I realized it was time to pick up the slack. My paper recommendations are finally showing up at schools, although that isn't reflected online yet.

Today I got a cryptic e-mail from "Graduate Admissions Office" (notification@embark.com) saying just, "We have received your application, and we look forward to reviewing it. Thank you!" Ooooo-kay. Wish I knew who that was!

In response to snowcapk, I got the same cryptic email message today. I am pretty sure it was from NYU (it might also be another school using the Embark website, however I think the only one I applied to that does use it is NYU).

Also, I am getting worried that I won't get into any schools I've applied to. I sort of screwed up my Freshman year with a miserable GPA that doesn't indicate my abilities.

Overall GPA is 3.21, however if you get rid of my Freshman year scores, it's up to about 3.7...

Gre scores q/v/w are 770/640/4.5 and GRE Biochem score is 610 (80%)

I dont have any undergraduate research experience (AHHH!!!!), but since I graduated last May, I've been working at Siemens Medical Diagnostics doing lab work.

I'm applying to programs in Parasitology/Infectious Disease/Microbiology depending on the school.

My list of schools are:
NYU (Sackler)
UPenn (an obvious stretch, but what the hell)
Penn State
Tulane
Notre Dame
Rochester
SUNY Buffalo
University of Virginia
University of Hawaii at Manoa (Asia Pacific Institute)

Do I stand a chance in hell?

vas72985, there could be a chance at those schools. Are you an international or domestic student? Also, try to have the strongest personal statement as possible, emphasizing why and what makes you desire a career in research and maybe how your lab work at Siemens Medical Diagnostics ensured this is the career path for you. Also, they might see your freshman year GPA compared to your other years and see your drastic improvement as a sign of maturity in your academics. Your GRE scores are also not bad either. Who are you getting your recommendations from and how strongly do you think they will write of you (and what would they write about your research potential)?

domestic student, undergrad at an IVY (forgot to mention that part, though not sure if it even helps)...recommenders are 1 professors that I TA-ed for (Biochemistry) and two instructors of lab courses I took that should write, overall, positive, strong letters

vas72985,

I think the major strike against you is lack of any academic research experience and the subsequent lack of letters from research mentors. You might need to take some time off to establish some research experience and then reapply.

anyone hearing from schools yet?

A friend of mine has heard from NYU Sackler and someone else on this board heard from WashU DBBS. I hope those invites start rollin' in soon...

oh, I'm jealous. Thanks to my GRE score complication, and the late submission of an LOR to one of my schools, I think I may not hear for a little while. POOP.

I have a question that is somewhat grad school related, but also pretty personal - does anyone know what the demographics of introverts/extraverts are like in biology graduate programs?

I've been reading about introverts lately, and it's absolutely flooring how familiar everything I'm reading about is. I'm wondering if graduate school will be a good environment to finally find some like-minded people!

hey buffkitten, would you mind sharing some of that introvert/extrovert reading material?

this is the first I've heard about this issue..

Google and Wikipedia are your friend. :)

All that I've heard is a request by WashU to pick 10 faculty whose research I find most interesting and enter the info online. It seems that we should start hearing back in a little over a week...

Is anyone else having problems with schools not receiving transcripts? I sent mine in early November and now have two schools that do not show that they have received them. ARG!

Does anyone know if they will let us know if portions of our aps are incomplete such as no GRE scores or transcripts or are we supposed to call and confirm this?

As far as I know, the big schools like Harvard and Berkeley prefer that you don't call - they'll call you if they are missing something.

I also used the MyWisc thing for UWisconsin, and it said they didn't have my transcript. But when I called them, they did receive it.

If the internet says they don't have it, and they don't explicitly ask you not to call, I would go ahead and check. Maybe it will demonstrate to them that you really care! :)

I got my first interview letter early yesterday from Baylor College of Medicine (Molecular & Cellular Biology). I'm not sure if too many people are applying there, but I thought it was worth a mention. I feel so relieved after the first letter...

Congratulations!!!
