Biology/Biomedical Sciences Applicants 2008

congrats-- how long ago did you apply?

Hi everyone,
Just so you know I got word from UNC-CH for interviews in BBSP just today. I am really surprised, I wasn't expecting anything until early Jan.
Good luck everyone!

ec1234, I submitted my application in the early-to-mid November. All of my recommendation letters were received at the end of November.

Does anyone know anything about BCM's MCB department/program?

I saw this a while back, you should read through the thread and posts by a BCOM graduate student and/or contact him directly.

I just heard from UChicago!!!!

I got an interview for the Mol Biosciences program at the end of January!!!!

WOO HOO!! They are one of my top choices!!!

I am green with envy!

I haven't heard anything, I suppose that is due to me submitting my aps fairly close to the deadline, or at least I hope that is why.

when did you submit?

I submitted my overall app about a month ago, but my last rec didn't get there until the 4th. And I don't think they've received my final GRE score report yet...

I was really surprised - I figured I'd hear from the schools who had deadlines on the 7th first - Chicago's official deadline isn't even until this Friday.

I'm so excited! I okayed the interview, and they already e-mailed me back. I want to go into Evo-Devo, so Chicago is a perfect match for me.

Good luck - with your stats, you have nothing to worry about. And I think it will probably be a while before I hear from any other schools.

Wow! Either CC is made of a bunch of overchievers, or a bunch of liars :)

Admission to grad school seems so competitive, even more than admission to med school. The people in this thread either have incredible academic record, or voluminous quantity of research experience.

Some people consider grad school as a back up to med school; I wonder how mistaken they are.

haha i think on average, grad school isn't nearly as competitive as med school. however, admission into a top school like UCSF or harvard may just be as difficult, if not more.

and yes, grad school as a back up for med school is just ridiculous.

Oh, and I wondered, are there any safeties in grad school admission?

For example, a student has a brilliant academic record (3.8-4.0GPA), some good recommendations, and some research experience (without publications). Are there any safeties for such students, or does it resemble med school admission where it is a crapshoot everywhere?

There are definitely safeties, and if your a domestic student, sometimes a lot of great schools can also be your "safeties". But then again, would it really be worth it to go a place that you consider a "safety" in the first place?

I will be interviewing in ST. Louis on Feb 7th.

*sigh of relief!

yay I got into Rockefeller!

what are your stats ec1234?

Undergraduate: major: Molecular Biology, Minor: Computational Biology (ivy)
GRE: 770Q 690V 5W

Subject Biology: 790

GPA: ~3.5, same in science ~3.8 in graduate classes

Research: 1 summer at NIH, 1 summer at Rockefeller, 1 class that was a serious experimental lab, Lab thesis for 3 semesters+summer.

Recs from really important people (including one on the Rockefeller board) who are also well acquainted with my research/have taught me for multiple semesters.

Well there it is. Congrats.

Hey everyone,

I got interviews at WashU (DBBS, Molecular Biophysics) and Columbia (Biochem and Biophysics), and got into USC's Chemistry dept. I am so excited!!!!

I just got an email from Weill Cornell. I am invited to attend the recruitment weekend (Feb 20-22).

I got an email from Notre Dame today saying to attend their recruitment weekend. Anyone have any idea what the general stats are for people who get invited to recruitments but don't get acceptances?

I've heard that each school is a bit different in this respect but for the most part it is more of a recruiting weekend than a selection process as long as you can coherently discuss what you said in your application you should be fine. This is pure hearsay but the rates of acceptance are above 70%, maybe Mollie has a comment about this?
