Northeastern seems like a really great school to me…I love the city, the campus is beautiful, and I know they have strong academics.
However, the only downfall is that I can’t really tell if they have the major I want. I like Biology and in particular have been searching for an Ecology and Evolutionary Biology major/concentration, which I know for a fact they don’t have at Northeastern (but I know they have an environmental science major). Overall, I’m interested in Ecology and Animals and Conservation, but I’m worried that I won’t be able to find classes/professors/research/co-ops etc that fit my interests. Everything I’ve seen so far from the Northeastern website especially is Molecular/Cellular biology and Neuroscience, although I know there is an Environmental science major .
Northeastern Biology students: Am I right that there isn’t really much for people interested in ecology and evolutionary biology at Northeastern? Have you found/do you know of co-op opportunities involving zoos/conservation centers/etc?
A friend of mine had a co-op at the New England Aquarium - I only knew this because I saw them in a tank one day!
I’m not an expert here, but it looks like you would want a classic Biology degree and then focus your classes on Ecology. Environmental Science seems to be very focused on the earth, energy developments, etc.
Being on the water, Northeastern has a marine Biology focus, which does also lump in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. If you look there, you will probably find what you are looking for.
Any general electives could also be used there, and could get you a nice concentration.
So, while there isn’t a best fit major, if you love everything else, it looks like at least some of the classes you are looking for are offered and would be worked in easily to a classic Biology major.
@PengsPhils I’m considering NEU very seriously and would go there if I got accepted, (colorado native- senior in high school awaiting decision in April) and your responses in many of the NEU threads are extremely helpful!!! Especially here because I would be a biology major. Thanks!
Edited the above to say 4, not two. The last section actually is 3 courses. So, for example, you could do the following all as part of a Biology Degree:
Ecology
Introduction to Evolution
A Zoology Course
Conservation Biology
