Biology Major

I was accepted for the spring term as a biological science major. I realized that BISC120 and 121 are only offered in the fall, while BISC 220L and 221L are only offered in the spring. Unfortunately, the community college that I am attending in the fall does not offer a biology class equivalent to BISC120 or 121. Will I have to take BISC 121 in the fall as a sophomore? Are there any other options? I don't want to be a semester behind everyone else

BISC 121/221 is the honors section so unless you’re in FSH you probably won’t be able to get into it.

Can you take it anywhere else? If you can’t, there are people who are in a similar situation because they are a spring admit, they changed majors, etc. As for falling behind, you could probably take 120 fall of your sophomore year along with BISC 320 (320 is closer to 220) and catch up as they really aren’t related. There is plenty of room to catch up if you fall behind, its really not a problem.

Well, I would have to take two biology classes (BIO111 +112) at my local community college in order to get credit for BISC120, which conflicts with my whole fall schedule. Also, don’t I need to take BISC120 as a prerequisite for BISC320?

Is there another college close to you that you can take it at?

Nope, just chem.

hmmm. I guess I’ll just take the both of the biology courses. Also, do I need to take Math 126? I got a 5 on my AP Calculus AB.

I don’t see it here, just 125:
[USC College Department of Biology](http://college.usc.edu/bisc/undergraduate/programs/bs_biosc.cfm)

If you’re premed though, I would take a semester of calculus.

Should I take the 125 or 126?

well, I took BISC 220 sophomore year (before taking 120… kept switching majors…) and in my particular class, it was almost half freshmen, half sophomores, and handfuls of juniors and seniors, so don’t worry about being too old. Also, even though I’m sure it would be helpful, 120 is not a prerequisite and you can still do fine without it. They are both quite different actually, it’s not really a big deal what order you take them.

as for calculus… it depends how good you are at calculus and how much you want to challenge yourself. Are you premed? Even though I could skip to 126, my undergraduate advisor recommended taking 125 to salvage my GPA for medschool… although if you did well in 126 that would obviously look better. It really depends how well you think you could perform amongst cutthroat competition, really (premed plus engineers, etc).

I was a Spring Admit Bio major, so here’s my input.

You must absolutely take Bisc 220 in the Spring semester it is a prerequisite for many of your major classes after freshman year.

Take Bisc 120 in the Summer or Fall, when possible. Bisc 120 is not a perquisite for most (actually, i can only think of Genetics at the moment) of the core major classes, just make sure you look ahead at the courses you want to register for to confirm or ask your advisor. Don’t worry if your CC doesn’t articulate 120; it’s not a big deal that you’re not taking it freshman year - like someone mentioned earlier people even take it their junior/senior year.
