For college I was thinking of majoring in biology or another science for sure because I aspire to be an internal medicine physician in the future, but I also am super passionate and interested in politics, so I was thinking of a poly sci major, or minor. I was wondering if that could be anyway advantageous for med school
Also kind of related but not, would public health or environmental sciences/ecology and political science go hand in hand any way? That’s my back up if I decide that I don’t want to be a doctor haha but I was just wondering if those would be a better pairing than bio and poly sci
Thanks!
You don’t have to major in a science to be a physician; you just have to complete the pre-med requirements. So you could easily major in political science and then do the pre-med track, completing your required classes. Recently medical schools have seen the value in admitting social sciences and humanities majors because of their different approach to medicine; however, you still have to have high GPA, high MCAT scores, and the other trappings of med school applications (shadowing, research, summer internships, whatever).
Yes, public health/environmental health definitely goes hand in hand with political science. There’s an entire field of public & environmental health policy, where you can help set and research the impact of legislation and other policies on the public’s health. You can specialize specifically in environmental policy if you want to. If you are interested in environmental health sciences, you might want to study one of the life sciences - environmental science or chemistry, particularly - in undergrad. But you could minor in it instead of major.
