<p>I heard someone say recently that highly selective schools have very few spots for pre-med students. As a loophole (sort of), a student could apply as a biomedical engineering major with a better shot of getting in (those programs are usually less popular), then switch to the school's pre-med track. Would this work? Are girls any more likely to get admitted to a biomed program then guys?</p>

<p>Pre-med students are those who intend to apply to medical schools and, consequently, take the basic science courses that are required for admission to all medical schools. Thus, all spots at all medical schools are reserved for pre-med students. If you are talking about majors, e.g., biology vs bioengineering, then bdm is right, as usual. Top med schools do not have quotas for majors. A word of caution about engineering in general. The top thirty or so engineering schools are very demanding, and you will have to work your tail off for a high GPA.</p>
