I am interested in CS, but my parents want me to do something with medicine, so I came up with the perfect combination: "Biomedical Computation". Except, I don't know what would I do with that degree. anyone know?

Well Computational Biology exists, why not look into to that?

I know, my question is, what kind of careers/industries exist in that field?

Wait, why does that have any effect on your decision whatsoever? You’re the one who’s going to be studying, not your parents. Why do they have any say in the matter, and why are you choosing to listen to them?

^^^Some parents still want their kids to be doctors. My husband wants my son to be a pediatrician, but I have a brother who was a doctor and died very young, so I steer him away from medicine. Every parent wants to brag about their son the doctor. In many cultures, it’s expected for the intelligent child to become a doctor. I know, old fashioned, but it’s still out there.

Since you like computer science, maybe you’d be interested in biomedical engineering? Or bioinformatics? You can make your parents happy that you’re going into the medical field, but you’ll be doing something you enjoy.

And yes, you are the one doing the work, so you should decide what you’re studying, but lots of times, mom and dad are footing the bill, so therefore, they feel they should have a say so in your chosen course of study. They also want to know that you’re going to make a living with that degree, not just sleep on their couch for the next 30 years!

Good luck!

That sounds all nice and dandy, but can anyone actually explain what bioinformatics actually is? or what kind of careers it involves?
