^^ this is what i was confused about. there shouldn’t be a limit…right?

There’s a limit, just not in the total number of schools you can send scores to. The 8 limit is for something else. Whoops.

just got back my writing score today. i thought i kicked ass but i apparently got my ass kicked; i got 4.0 which is about 41 percentile. yikes. how important is writing score??

For biological sciences, at worst, “not very,” at best, “not at all.”

From what I’ve seen people in biosciences don’t care about your GRE writing score – at all. Maybe there are a few schools that do but I haven’t found them yet.

Good luck!

I am so annoyed with my GRE scores. I didn’t get less than a 600 in verbal in my practice tests…don’t know what happened on test day
How does this affect my app? What if I retake it and I still suck?

8 publications?! What the hell are you?!

Ehem. ANYways, you’re stats are impressive…except for those GRE scores.

No matter how you slice this, you should retake that GRE. You should aim for a minimum 580+V and 750+Q.

You got a 600 verbal in practice tests then received a 500 in the actual tests? Assuming you are referring to Powerprep CAT scores, that is strange. Scores don’t fluctuate that much.

At the end of the day, the GRE is your only flaw and it is a minor one at that (however, one that still requires correcting). Best of luck!

I know I feel so terrible! I got exactly a 600v on both powerprep cats
I think I might have just psyched myself out on the test day. Back to the ol’ drawing board :-(

False much? I got a 650 and a 700, then got a 540 on the real thing. I’ve also seen several other citations on here of PowerPrep verbal not being reliably predictive (compared to quantitative).

Eh, I found powerprep accurate. I got a 560 on the verbal, and my practice scores were 560 and 580.

Hello everyone,

Intended study: pharmacology
University&major: public – pharmaceutical product development
GPA: 3.8/4.0
GRE: 550 V, 730 Q (oh how i hate those tests)
Research: 2 first author publications in peer reviewed journals, 3 posters
Research since Freshman year with internships in both academia and pharmaceutical industry. Graduating in 3 and a half years.

Applying to…

Baylor
Penn State
Johns Hopkins
Duke
Wake Forest
Emory
University of VA

I know my GRE’s aren’t so hot, but I do have 2 1st author publications as an undergraduate in respectable journals which my advisor says is not too common, so I’m hoping this may outweigh my GRE’s? Any advice/feedback would be very much appreciated :)

good luck to everyone!

anyone have input on whether applying early is beneficial? my goal is to have my apps done by the end of the semester.

It’s beneficial because you can be sure your application is complete by the deadline and that all of your LORs and GRE scores have arrived safely.

In addition, some programs start reviewing applications as they are complete, so if you finish your application early, you may be notified early for interviews.

Here it is:

Cumulative GPA: 3.43
Major GPA: 3.59
GRE: 1230 (560-V/670-Q)
Schools: OHSU, Universty of Oregon, University of Washington, Washington State, and UCSF. Perhaps a few more if I find some more programs I’m excited about.
Experience: 1 year in a biochem lab, 3 months NIH internship.

Applying to: Neuroscience Ph.D, interested in neural development/neurodegenerative disease.

MolSysBio - I know my school starts reviewing apps in October, so having things in early gets you higher up in the pile and earlier interview invites. I think early is always better than just in time, cuz if something goes wrong and you send things the day before they’re due you could be screwed.

hi,

Does anyone have problems accessing online application for Harvard?

Assumedly, the application is not yet open.

yeah, it’s not up yet. i for one am hoping i get into a quant bio program like harvard systems biology. i can’t stand the thought of having to take more of these rote memorization bio courses instead of more math/physics. ugh.

My pathetic profile:

Interest: Genetics PhD programs

School: University of Toronto

Major: Molecular Genetics and Microbiology

GPA: Cumulative: 3.31 Major: 3.37

GRE: Wrote it twice—1st time: 720Q/640V 2nd time: 800Q/670V RLLY wondering whether I should write the biology GRE.

Research: Currently 1.5yrs. If you count my current senior thesis project, 2.5yrs.

1st lab: Proteins lab as a summer student during my 2nd yr as an undergrad. Just purifying a whole bunch of proteins for further functional enzyme assays. Left the lab prior to running any of the assays. It was a solid experience.

2nd lab: Volunteered during my 3rd yr as well as a summer project. HIV genetics lab. Literally spent an entire summer trying desperately to clone a few inserts into different expression vectors. Was mind-numbingly boring. Didn’t care much for my P.I. either.

3rd lab (current): Just started my thesis. A whole lot of mammalian cell culture work. Cell signalling and growth.

LORs: This is where things get tricky. 3 PIs-3LORs right? Well not quite. My current P.I. told me my previous P.I. gave him a lukewarm reference. Something along the lines of “Student XYZ works diligently and shows competence within a lab setting. However, he needs to express more enthusiasm for his research and engage more with other lab members about his research.” That kind of reference is a killer. I mean I can’t have a P.I. who questions my enthusiasm writing me an LOR. Gaining his respect always felt like an uphill battle for me so I don’t think I want to risk using him for an LOR.

That means I need a 3rd LOR. I am currently working under a Postdoc. Would it be appropriate to use her for an LOR even though I am using the lab P.I. as an LOR?

If not, I think I will use a professor from a 4th yr seminar class I am in. If he says no, I honestly don’t know where I can get a solid 3rd LOR. I have 2 other options in the back of my mind but they are sort of flimsy.

PUBLICATIONS: NONE.

Schools:

Cornell Weill
Rockefeller
Columbia
UPenn
Yale
MIT
Princeton
UChicago

TSRI—assuming I write the biology subject GRE

I know there are a lot of other great schools I could apply to but most of them are located in towns/cities I would never consider taking up residence.

I know I don’t have any safety schools. I just don’t believe in them. If I get rejected from every school, I will simply stay at UofT for an extra year and get more research, another LOR, and maybe a publication.

This is the one point that I have been debating In my head for a while. I am sort of busy this year with my courses and the application process. My time management skills suck. Therefore, I’m not in the mood to study for a test–the GRE biology subject test-- I don’t know I’ll do well in. I mean I know I can ace the test if I have the time. But time is the issue. The application process + courses is bad enough but this extra test will make this semester hell for me.

How much do I really stand to gain from a solid GRE biology score (90%+MolBio, 85%+ Evol Bio, 75%+ Organismal Physio, ~85% total)? Can I afford NOT to write the subject test?!

I’m freaking out because I am wondering why in the hell I didn’t study for this test during my 4month summer break!! I am seriously starting to consider waiting until next year to apply for grad schools but I want to apply now because I don’t want to wait. I need to ■■■■ of Toronto and get the rest of my life rolling ASAP.

Any opinions/advice on my dilemna would be appreciated.
