I’m black (jamaican) and part Asian, however i have i don’t have an asian name, nor sterotypical asian features (just mixed fixtures) nor was i raised in an asian household (raised by mom, dad is mixed). My question is, would it hurt me to report asian on applications? (btw, i’m learning chinese, connecting with the culture, etc…) This has always been a question on my mind. Thanks!
Dad mixed. Check black (predominate race).
Check black.
You’re multicultural, learning Korean. Why not check both.
Don’t check both. It will hurt you
Like @MaroonDaddy said, check black because it is predominate race. There won’t be place to mention that you’re only 25% Asian, so it might hurt because colleges might assume you’re half black and half asian, or maybe more asian than black. Good luck on your apps!
There is no qualification such as “predominant” race. It’s about how you self identify and OP can decide.
By studying Korean and some about the culture, he’s giving himself dimension. Percy, you might want to learn how the CA words it and what they expect.
If you want to put yourself in the best light for college applications, just check black. Disagree with @lookingforward: the benefits of being a URM far exceed the added dimension you say checking asian brings. I also think checking black is probably the most honest as well.
I disagree. You should put both. That’s what you are. The idea that any drop of Asian ancestry will hurt your college admissions is preposterous. There’s a spot on the common app for you to list more specifically.
I would argue that being of Jamaican and Asian descent would be HELPFUL in fact, if schools are looking for diversity. I think yours would be a very uncommon bi racial makeup.
What colleges are you looking it? Not all colleges look at race.
Im a she thanks for everyone that commented.
@CitizenSen i’m looking at top-tier colleges, mainly private schools, like emory, USC, stanford, etc. Schools of that calibar
Just to be clear, i identity as both, not just “predominately black”. I’ve never seen the effect being black/asian has on admissions, so im quite curious what others think. Thanks
