BME at Georgia Tech or University of Washington

My D is pretty set on doing BME. Now, it’s down to GT and UW-Seattle (In state) as she got into both. Though UW is direct-to-college admit. She was also offered the Provost scholarship at GT for a value of $85K over 4 years, which brings the costs down to the same level as UW. We were supposed to visit GT in a couple of weeks, but with everything that is going on (Corona Virus), not sure that’s still going to happen. We’ve heard a lot about GT strong co-op and study abroad program, and are wondering these help set their program a part. Would a BME major at GT be a better choice over UW at the same costs?

Thank you all for chipping in…

I have no special knowledge with respect to BME. Nevertheless, your daughter has 2 outstanding choices. The University of Washington in Seattle receives a lot of federal funding for research. A lot.

Does your daughter want a change of scenery ?

She’s a little torn too. Family and friends in Seattle Vs. her dream school GT. She’s okay with experiencing new environment.

No offense but from what I’ve heard it’s better to just get a ME degree. Apparently its slim pickings for actual BME work after ugrad.

@Greymeer . Thanks! Her plan is to do the BS/MS program

What are the requirements for maintaining the GT scholarship?

Never having visited GT, how did it to be her “dream school”?

a minimum of 3.0 GPA is the main requirement

Find out from Washington how competitive the BME major (or other desired engineering major) is to get into. https://www.engr.washington.edu/admission/directtocollege/faq says that “Some majors will have more requests for placement than they can accommodate.”

@Adalls18 If you are on fb you may want to join the Georgia Tech Current or potential Parents facebook page. Because of the school closings, they have started a thread listing student that your daughter could contact to talk to about life and her major of interest at GT.

@racereer I am, and just submited a request to join the fb page. Thanks for tip!
