ok, so i'm a sophmore in BME and I'm in an MSE250 class...and at the beginning of the year, most of our class was BME's but now, i Know at least 10-15 people who have switched over to another engineering major (majority of whom are now IOE, some switched to MSE, and some to EECS/ChemE). Is a BME undergrad that bad? I realize you can't do much with it and you have to get a Master's but all these people switched out because the general consensus here is that a its better to get a "broader" undergrad degree... I mean I know I wanna BME but with all these people switching out, I'm starting to question my decision a little bit. Any advice? Anyone here knowledgable on this topic?

it’s a very overrated field, has been for years. there has been talk that it’s the future for like a decade. I think it’s a good undergrad major if you want to learn about engineering/biotech, and eventually end up in some analyst role related to this sector. But with just the undergrad degree itself, if you want to get a job in r&d, or something cutting edge, you might be dissapointed come october/november of your senior year and find out most companies are hiring IOE/ME/EECS.

For my response, let me direct you to page 11 of this PDF. http://career.engin.umich.edu/annualReport/Annual_Report0809.pdfEngineeringCareerResourceCenterAnnualReport2008-2009

Average starting salary for BME undergrads: $19,240/year

Working 40hrs/week, 50 weeks a year, $10/hour: $20,000/year

If you’re cool with fast food employees making more than you (well, not quite, but almost as much) then maybe it’s worth considering. Otherwise…

well only 1 person reported, that could very well be a research position at a university which is typically poorly paid. but it’s funny how people fight to get the BME major at a lot of these top tier schools and then have a hard time finding a job come graduation time.

Well, I am planning on going for a Master’s in BME regardless…not stick it out with an undergraduate degree.

Also, look at [Michigan Engineering | 2007-2008 Salary Information](http://career.engin.umich.edu/salary/20072008.html) thats 2007-2008, BME has 50k/year.

And [Michigan Engineering | 2006-2007 Salary Information](http://career.engin.umich.edu/salary/20062007.html) – 53k$.

So every year it’s one of the worst paid degrees.

My implication that that’s how much you were going to make wasn’t really serious. But it seems like it’s only one you should do if you REALLY want to do it.
